Today, driving home on the freeway, I saw a dog ...
on the back of a flatbed truck. The dog, a black lab, was huddled down against the bed and up against the cab, and obviously concerned. It was trying to stay safe while the truck sped down the freeway at ~65 mph. The truck went around a cloverleaf and I could see the dog was sliding and trying to keep from flying off. I think this was outrageously unsafe and stupid, and I felt like cutting the guy off and forcing him to stop. The dog should have been riding safe in the cab. Some people are so fucking stupid and selfish.

1. agh...
I hate that kind of behavior.

Same reason I can't watch those animal rescue shows on the Animal Channel. The things people do to animals!

2. Half the people around here travel with dogs in their pickup beds.
65 MPH is way too fast, though, especially for a lab. The border collies, though, seem to love being in the back. They run from one side of the pickup bed to the other, back and forth, back and forth, back and forth.

I once had to follow, for several miles, a pickup with a manic border collie in the back. It made me dizzy.

I bet that driver had no frickin' idea what his/her dog was going through. I bet the driver thought the dog was having *wheeeeee* fun. And you can pretty well assume the dog wasn't allowed in the cab because it's "dirty."

3. this was a smooth FLATBED
No sides to keep the dog in. The dog had nothing to hang on to.

4. I did leave that out, didn't I?
But we have people with flatbeds and dogs in them, too. I've even seen dogs on the frickin' roof of a truck. We have people with hay stacked yay-high in their pickup, and on top will be a dog, or several dogs.

But you're right, a flatbed is no place for a lab to be. They aren't agile enough to maintain their balance in that situation, and 65 MPH is too damn fast.

Sounds to me like the dog was scared, too. That's the worst part of it.
