Question for gay male DUers: The Irony?
I watched "Lover Come Back" today on TCM, with Rock Hudson and Doris Day. Long story short, there are two older characters in the movie who coincidentally end up observing signs of many sexual escapades with women by Rock Hudson. At one point, Rock gets stranded while in the nude and ends up hitching a ride back to his apartment with a Furrier's truck.

He sneaks back into his apartment wearing a full length fur coat and the two old guys see him, saying something like, "Of all the guys, you never would have suspected him." The implication was that he was gay because he was wearing the fur coat.

Was this scene meant to be true irony, or was it just a goof that he went along with in silence? It is a famous scene in the gay community, or is it looked upon in a different way? I loved it!

Thanks for you input,

Floog

1. I have never heard of that one
but the movie with him and Tony Randall fighting over Doris Day is nothing short of hysterical in retrospect.

2. The doctor invented "VIP," the ten cent triple martini mint . . .
. . . and everybody who ate them went into a drunk rage.

That was hilarious, too! :)

3. Irony:
see Ricky Martin singing "California Girls" in tight iridescent blue leather pants at the Brian Wilson tribute concert...

now THAT'S irony :P

4. You should find a copy of "The Celluloid Closet" by Vito Russo
if you've not already heard of it. It doesn't cite that scene specifically, but it does reference their movies, and the camp sensibility therein. That's the funny thing about camp; it functions on multiple levels as an ironic comment often with risqué gay undertones.

It makes you wonder, all those actors from years past who had to perform in scenes like that. Of course, in retrospect, it lends yet another level of irony.

5. Wow. Think about this.
In the movie, "Lover Come Back," Rock is pretending to Doris Day that he is someone other than his womanizing main character. She thinks he is someone else.

He pretends to be insecure around women, afraid to make a move, not bold enough to kiss Doris, not confident enough to make love to her . . . .

That is another telling point of this film.

Damn good film for laughs and there are some cryptic, revealing aspects to Rock's character's personality.
