DWI city ordinance...
Our mayor (Albuquerque) just signed a bill where police can now confiscate a vehicle after your FIRST driving while intoxicated offense.

:wtf:

1. People who drive while intoxicated are endangering my life.
So this really doesn't bother me, as long as there is due process. If someone has a single offense with a handgun, I would hope the cops would take that too.

4. I disagree...

Especially when no one is ever taught how many drinks will put you near the legal limit. The people who endanger others are the ones w/ a BAP 3-4 times the legal limit. And they are generally repeat offenders.

If I have 3 or 4 beers I can drive just as well as I can when I don't drink. Does this put me at .09 BAP, one one-hundreths above the legal limit? I don't know...But if it did, and I was tested, I would have my car taken away? I don't think that's fair at all.

edit: My problem is not w/ the idea of taking one's car away. It's just that they are doing this on FIRST offense...

"If I have 3 or 4 beers I can drive just as well as I can when I don't drink..."

bullshit- unless you're a shitty driver sober too.

I have NO sympathy for ANYONE who drinks and drives- at 44, I'm one of only two males in my personal circle who have never gotten a DUI.

for instance- i think the DUI laws should be MUCH tougher- murder charges, not "manslaughter" ought to apply to fatal dui's.

9. Wow...
I don't see how you can call BS so fast on something like this. You don't even know what I weigh or how I react to alcohol.

11. it makes no difference whatsoever-
if you drink 4 beers, you're NOT going to be able to drive as well as if you're sober- people who think otherwise are only deluding themselves, and endangering everyone else.

10. Why is up to someone else to teach you how much you can drink?
It is your responsibility, not theirs. If you blow a .08 in my city, you should go to jail, and I hope they keep you off the road in the future. My nieces and nephews are riding along with their parents in this city, I don't need people who don't know their limits driving around in the same area just because no one "taught" them how much to drink.

Maybe instead of worrying about them taking the car away on the first offense, you should worry about why you feel it should be ok to have a first offense at all?

2. Revenue generator,
either pay big to get it back, or watch it be auctioned.

That's really fucked up.

3. I don't really have any sympathy for drunk drivers
Actually, I take that back. I have *no* sympathy for drunk drivers. The asshat who drove through my business last month is a multiple DUI offender. A lot of good it does to suspend someone's license, when they just get back in the car and drive drunk again like he did.

6. in chicago, they confiscate cars for a number of reasons-
if you're caught trying to buy a dime-bag of weed while in your car- it's going to the impound lot.
same thing for trying to pick up a hooker.
and dui's, naturally.

8. Take any car registered to the offender...

I have helped the VFD scrape up too many after "a couple of beers."

My rule...I only have a drink if I have one hour before I have to drive. I only have two drinks if I am walking. YMMV.

On edit: not to hard since I usually have another reason for not drinking....s
