1. Garden gnomes rock
as long as you put them up in a sort of ironic way. Same goes for flamingoes. :7

2. Voted 'Other' : One lone statue, white, --
-- quietly landscaped, with the statue of one of the Greek gods or goddesses, Michelangelo's David, etc. Something Hadrian would have put in the expanse of his villa.

& no matter what you choose, this rule pertains: No fake deer.

Edited on Mon Apr-25-05 12:44 PM by LynneSin

Your tribute to Matcom

Here you can have an entire farm without all that crap to cleanup

Ducks with Coats - YEAH!!!

Support our troops - put soldiers on your front lawn (would scare away terrorist lawn ornaments too)

9. Definitely a gazing globe...I've had two, one silver, one deep red
Overall, I much prefer the silver. Placed in the center of a flower be near the house it can be stunning .

23. Gazing Ball, Gnomes and Flamingos and a GUARD HOG
We have em all and the yard looks great. We have an acre and my wife has gnomes strategically placed. And a handful of Flamingos carefully staged, not tacky at all. One big blue gazing ball in the front landscaping. Tons of Impatiens and Melampodiums out back. This has got to be my best year in a long time for making the place look good. And, we have one big concrete "Guard Hog" standing duty at our Patio Door. Actually its an Arkansas Razorback which I proudly display.

10. I reccomend a gazing ball for front yard
and a lawn flamingo flock out back or in a patio garden.
The gazing ball base is important. There are many styles to coordinate with your garden and/or landscape.

I keep having problems with gazing balls. The color insides seems to melt away after about a year. I have the rubber stopper in the bottom to keep out moisture. Maybe it's the extreme heat in Georgia.

21. All lawn ornaments are hideous, IMHO
Either go uber-tacky and fill your yard with pink flamingoes and bathtub shrines to the blessed virgin, or go with a tasteful birdbath.

25. A polished granite obelisk
You can't beat the price - they're available for the taking at any local cemetary.

Yes - I'm kidding.

I do a lot of landscaping and garden ornaments are a major issue, needless to say. Right now I'm trying to place a large Etruscan style amphora shaped jar into a Hosta bed I'm designing. It's gonna' look amazing. But, it took me forever to find just the right item. I'd go to an upscale nursery and just study what's available, and avoid the common. Anything that looks authentically weathered and "ancient" appeals to me. Most of the statuary available is too Romanesque in a seriously bad way. Some of the more recent Asian designs are wonderful; I've seen copies of the Terracotta Warriors that are almost perfect. Large gongs on stands are weiku, also.

31. How bout the bent-over gardening lady in bloomers?
They're popular in the outlying areas around here. Painted plywood of a big butt in polka-dot bloomers. I've heard them called Betty Bloomers but online I found a reference to Fanny Grannies.

Do not do a Google image search for Fanny Grannies if you have Safe Search off. :scared:

I know suburban ladies who dress up their lawn geese. It's quite the thing to have outfits for different seasons and holidays. Here's the Goose Clothes Superstore - they have holiday wardrobes, sports uniforms and more. You can even dress your goose like Elvis. I think you should get an army of geese and dress them like Satan.
http://www.lawngoosedesigns.com/

If not geese, I vote gazing ball. They reflect the beauty of your property and still function for their original purpose: to spy on lovers trying to seclude themselves in remote corners of the garden.

I DID include not one but TWO types of "Gazing Balls"

Between you and me I am SHOCKED at the number of DU'ers who like those. I meant it as a joke.
