Cat still lost... bastards at animal shelter lie to us... update

Well, my cat is still missing. The morons at the town animal shelter (the place where the "animal control officers" do not collect strays) and the clerk who assured us that no cats are put to sleep until being held 5 days (liar!) are lying scum.

Turns out, they DO collect animals. And they DO euthanize cats on the SAME DAY they are collected.

Furthermore, they keep minimal records of the cats who get this treatment, take no pictures, save no bodies, nothing.

SO, if our cat was scooped up by these lying scum, she would have been gone before we noticed she was missing.

This sucks.

Very strong letters to follow, to newspapers, ASPCA, NY State Senator, Town (like that will help) Supervisorm, and whomever else I think will help keep this from happening again.

I wish people knew how much suffering they could spare animals if they just spayed or nuetered their damn cats and dogs!!
It's simply sickening how many poor animals we put down just because the shelters don't have the space or the money to keep them all x(

2. Most shelters do this

They assume a cat outside is a stray..unless there is a collar and id tag.. That's why we ended up with so many "outdoorsies" .. I could not bring myself to turn them in , only to be killed because no one loved them..

Let's hope that your kitty is just wandering or was taken in by a family :)

Don't beat yourself up over it.. There is nothing you can do..Cats are very evasive, especially when scared.. There is a good chance that they did not catch her..

Demand to see the log book if you are still suspiscious.. They MUST keep some kind of records..

3. The records are, at best sketchy, my wife looked at them

most of the descriptions read, cat, male. or cat, neutered, female.
like that.
No photos.

I think at least have photos of the cats, so we could have some closure, if that is what happened.

And the worse thing is, people bring cats there thinking they are helping people get their pets back. They lie and tell them they follow NY state law, which is to hold them for 5 days. But they don't.

4. When our dog was killed, we did not know it for 23 days

We searched for her every night til after midnight, and before work.. The pound said she had not been brought in.. On the 23rd day, I demanded to see the collar box (a friend had told me about it), and there, right on top was her collar with a note stapled to it.. female yellow lab ..5 yrs est.. 8/13/96.. cottonwood/perris..doa..

My 30 yr old son still has her collar on a peg in his kitchen.. Blanca was HIS dog .:(

The same day we left on vacation.. the housesitter let them into the wrong side of the yard and she escaped (the FIRST and ONLY time she had been out without a leash)..

I was devastated, but at least we knew what happened to her.. Until Tahiti, we never took another vacation.. Just the thought, that while we were happily going on vacation she was dying, and no one was there to even help or comfort her, soured me on vacations..(I delivered her)..

5. cats are very rarely actually picked up by Animal Control. See, AC won't

come out and CATCH a cat, it has to either be confined in something, or it has to be brought to the shelter. Cats that are actually picked up by AC are usuallly feral/wild, or injured or dead.

The nice ones are the ones turned in by owners who can no longer keep them.

So don't disparage AC so quickly. These people aren't working there to get rich. They don't make a lot of money at all actually, and do that work because they enjoy working with animals.

Chances are your cat has either gotten hurt or worse, or has gone the other direction and has adopted a new family.

Posters several blocks in all directions, including the offer of a reward (don't say how much) and a description with a date, is the BEST way to get fluffy back.

7. I worked

at a shelter some years ago and it is hell. For minimum wage I became a cat assassin. I couldn't stand it. I hope you find your cat, but sadly if that is a large shelter and your cat was brought in as a stray, it may no longer be there.

Both our cat and dog have Avid microchips just in case. Our cat is indoor/outdoor.

10. I don't see how they could. There does not appear to be

any equipment for it, and the dolt my wife spoke to had no idea that was possible.
Check your shelter, see what is going on.
I am appalled at the mis-management we see here.

11. Tag your next pet

I know that cats aren't collared as much as dogs, but it is helpful to put a tag with your address and phone number on it. If you lose it and someone else picks it up, they may return it to you or call you. If the animal shelter calls you up, they should call you as well. In some areas, animal shelters charge you for reclaiming your pet so they have an interest in making sure that you are notified.
I am sorry with what happened to your cat though. It is horrible that your local animal shelter is not more considerate.

I think you should contact your local news channel's investigative departments. They usually love getting tips on such stories to investigate. I think if more of the public knew, there would be remarkable outrage over the practice.

I also have ASPCA and the NY State Atty General... we found they are violating state law with the same-day euthanasia.... Newsday, Town Hall, of course, Suffolk Co Leg, NY State Senator we know

YOu know, just crank up the heat. I don't know that they got my cat and killed her, but I don't know they did not, and they don't know either. This makes it worse than before.

BTW, the other animal shelters in neighboring towns were completely different operations... the workers were considerate, took the information and put it in a book, offered to show me pictures, all the things they should be doing here.

I am on a crusade.

13. I have never trusted the Ac folks with cats

They seem to have a different attitude toward dogs, and the ones I have known will go to great lengths to find a home for a dog. They often seem to have a somewhat cavalier attitude toward cats, not that I understand it. We have taken in three abandoned cats over the years and they are family to us. We also feed a bunch of others, for whom there is not enough space in our apartment. One of the cats that is on better terms with our brood caomes in and naps on the couch, but goes back outside after a time. He went missing about three weeks ago and I was beside nmyself worrying about what might have happened to him. I, too called the AC folks, and had about the same experience as you describe. Fortunately, Fred reappeared last week. He has been adopted by some students two buildings down from us, and looks great. There is always hope that your cat is simply shut in somewhere and is OK. Keep the faith.
