16. One of my best friends was beaten severely by several New Orleans cops...

when he was 18. Okay, the cop was unfairly hassling he and some friends and my friend did punch the cop and knock him flat on his ass, but when the six other cops arrived on the scene they exacted retribution. He is "lucky" that he wasn't murdered by those thugs.

19. I spent 7 days at Mardi Gras three years ago

I was amazed at how little violence I saw. One fight outside a bar full of bikers, and one cop throwing a roundhouse at a guy he was arresting (who I guess protested when he was detained for pissing in a doorway a block or two from the big crowds).


A cop I met at my hotel breakfast bar put it in perspective for me when I told him about how my friend had been mugged by a gang of thugs late the night before. They'd just swept down the street surrounding him and going thru his pockets so fast he didn't even know what had hit him. Before he knew it, they were gone and so was his wallet.

The cop asked me, expectantly "well, did he fight 'em?". lol, what other city would the cops encourage tourist to fight muggers?
