Holy Crap. My paycheck bounced.
It BOUNCED!!!!! I swear to god. I am so angry I called and screamed at the manager and I hope he fires me so I can sue his ass for not paying me for the hours I worked.

I am looking for another job, but JESUS...This pisses me off so much!

2. That's not uncommon
A lot of companies write their employees checks when they fully well know that there isn't any money in their account. It's very common in the restaurant industry, it's happened to me a couple of times, unfortunately. I hope you end up getting your money.

4. I have not gotten a reply.
I loathe retail, so I am looking elsewhere. If he does not do anything, I will show up at corporate and track him down.

10. Contact your local Dept of labor, wage and hour division.
I was an accountant for 40 years, and the one thing that you tell every Company is "the first thing you pay is your employees!" This is not out of sympathy for the employees, it's blatently illegal not to!

That's why I asked you what reason the manager gave you. If it was an error, he should have said it will be fixed in the morning!

My husband went through a similar situation many years ago. He worked for a small grocery store then. They finally did go out of business, but the employees were all paid every penny they were owed. Wages are always the FIRST thing to be paid, everything and everyone else takes a backseat.

5. I'm sorry.
That's awful. I would absolutely die if that ever happened and I bounced a payroll check to one of my employees. :(

6. I take it this is not a Fortune 500 company
Of course, we don't know that a Fortune 500 wouldn't do something like that nowadays.

7. I worked in an independant coffee shop for a year
On pay Friday, it was a race to the bank to cash it. If you were the 4th in line, "Sorry we're unable to process this." Then it got where we were paid out of the register $20-$40 at a time. And then I quit (after I worked there a year). I was owed almost $500 when I quit. I gave him a week to get all the money together. When he still didn't have it I called saying "You have my money early tomorrow morning, or I'm calling a complaint into the Texas Workforce Commission." Surprise, the next morning he had my money. The coffee shop shut down a month or two after I quit, and one good friend had to take the owner to court to get the money.

At least at the time, I knew it wasn't because he just didn't want to pay us, it was we weren't making enough money to cover us. Thank god for tips, because that's what a lot of the employees used to eat.

I feel so bad for you, I know how it is. Get out now. It'll only get worse.

8. What state are you in?
Find out what your legal options are first, before you react. Make them pay or make them wish to hell they had.

11. Tell your manager to pay up or you'll visit the DA's "bad check" team.
Every county has a division that does nothing but handle bad checks. Our county, as of late, has become especially aggressive at prosecuting bad check writers.

If you plan to work there for awhile, this might be a bad idea, but if you are planning on leaving anyway, threaten him with this.

12. I had that happen one time, and it ended up being because, like
most companies, the company I was working for had a separate checking account for payroll purposes than they did for their other expenses. Like many companies, once they cut the payroll checks, they do a transfer for the exact amount of payroll into that account. This time, they had a new person who got confused about the process and didn't transfer the funds to the right account. So, what happened is that when all the employees (about 25 in all, it was a small company) went to cash their checks, the first 10 or 15 exceeded the overdraft protection on that account, so the last 10 or 15 were told the checks wouldn't clear.

It was aggravating, but an understandable error, and the company agreed to pay for any penalties incurred by us as a result (late fees, any bounced check fees we might have incurred because we couldn't deposit funds, etc.)

The lesson I learned was don't get REALLY pissed until you know the whole story.

13. I worked for a lawyer at one time.
And his checks would bounce regularly. I would have to call his bank to see if the check was any good. If they told me yes, I would make a beeline to the bank and cash it before anyone else beat me to it.

14. I feel your pain!
It happened to me on a regular basis, where I worked before. Got old real quick. Unfortunately, the "boss" left the business owing me and others a LOT of money. He is on the run now with lots of men in dark coats looking for him. hope they find him.

Where I work now, isnt a whole lot better. Our paychecks are consistently late, sometimes as much as 4 days we have to wait.
A real pain, but Im leaving, already have another job, so thats good.
It wouldnt be so bad if this boss wasnt such a free spender, but she will go to Walmart and buy literally hundreds and hundreds of dollars of stuff, and is just absolutely frivolous with the company money, then says paychecks will be a few days late. No one to complain to. She owns the company. glad Im leaving.
