The origin of the "Grimaldi Curse"

The prince's illness revived the bizarre notion of a curse that is supposed to have hung over the Grimaldi dynasty during its seven centuries of rule in Monaco. Imposed in 1297 after the first Grimaldi, Francesco the Spiteful, tricked the principality's defenders by disguising himself as a monk seeking sanctuary, only to slaughter them, the curse is said to have decreed that the family would never have long and successful marriages.
