I don't even know what to say. Call it frivolous news if you will, but that's just sad. Poor guy, give him his cookies.

1. Cookie Monster's addiction made NONE of us fat. We did.
A pap, frivolous article... but eminently amusing. :D Nominated.

2. How coincidental. I just finished watching "Anchorman."
You know they say, "The truth is often spoken in jest." There was a lot of truth to that movie and this article just proves it.

4. He's the fucking COOKIE monster, for God's sake!
Let him eat cookies, and let Elmo sing songs about veggies.

Next thing you know they'll make Bert & Ernie live in seperate houses so James Dobson can stop worrying, or tell the Count to dress like a human being and ditch the spooky cape thing.

5. The real issue here is Oscar's homelessness

You stupid liberals going on about getting fat from cookies when poor Oscar is living in a garbage can! Next thing you'll bring frivolous lawsuits against cookie manufacturers! That's typical liberal elitism! :P

17. Oscar LIKES his garbage can. He's a GROUCH! Besides, it's surprisingly
capacious, and I suspect 4-dimensional goings-on. I recall a show (watched with my then-small daughter) in which he rummaged in his basement, which appeared to have quite a bit of room. He brings up things that, put together, would exceed the apparent volume of the garbage can. So it may LOOK like a garbage can, but - like Dr. Who's tardis - it is far more inside than out. And he likes it. He feels good and grouchy in it.

The fact that I am writing this is a clear indication that I need to turn off the computer and go to bed.

Good night!
:hi:

Though I admit that the possible multidimensional parallels between Dr. Who's tardis and Oscar's garbage can do have the flavor of the kind of ideas I get when it's past my bedtime...

Wow, I'm reponsible for a first at DU! And not a bad subject for it, either!

12. Yeah, this whole thing is misguided.
I watched Sesame Street. Never once did I want to eat cookies because of the Cookie Monster, because guess what? I already wanted to eat cookies! I was a flipping kid! It was my parents who made sure I ate the right balance of food.

13. This cookie monster thing is such bullshit
Any writer/producer with half a brain could use CM's education of the dangers of eating too many cookies to teach better eating habits to impressionable young kids. There are also fairly healthy cookies out there. I just think this is assinine!

18. So weird....
My four year old just told me the other day that Cookie Monster should not eat so many cookies and should eat more healthy foods! I wonder if someone mentioned this to her at school. I told her that Cookie Monster was a monster that lives on cookies and he's fine to eat cookies but we are people and we need other foods. We talked about animals and all the different things they eat. She was fine with that. She eats things like yogurt, mushrooms, spinach, sushi, salads of all types....I don't think Cookie Monster's eating habits have hurt her in the least.

24. It's WORSE to declare ketchup to be a vegetable in school lunches
Edited on Mon Apr-11-05 02:16 AM by Nothing Without Hope
as happened under Reagan's brand of "compassionate" conservatism. :eyes:

Here's more on this story, along with another nice one, classifying batter-fried french fries as a fresh vegetable.

http://www.straightdope.com/columns/040716.html

Edited to add: At that time I got a favorite T-shirt (long since defunct) blazoned with the burning question: "Which one is the vegetable?" Choice A was a bottle of ketchup and Choice B was Ronald Reagan.
