Darla fluffs all up and won't come to me at all. After a lot of cajoling and a stern command, Gabby finally climbed onto my hand, but he leans away from me whenever I get too close. Maybe they think I've turned back into a freeptard. :D

1. are they reacting to the color
or to the odor of the dye?

I've never owned birds...but I hope to someday.

2. Parrots have a very poor sense of smell.
In fact, most ornithologists don't think they have a sense of smell at all. They do, however, have taste buds, something which most other birds lack. Turkey vultures are the champion sniffers of the bird order. Parrots are the champion tasters. :)

Parrots have excellent vision...ornithologists say they can see into the ultra-violet. So, yes, he's reacting to the color, most likely. :)

Cracks me up. :) He fell in love with this copper-colored bell and wouldn't stop ringing it for literally weeks. :)

16. he's beautiful!
Thanks for the education. I've only just begun learning about birds, which is why I have hopes of having some someday, but not immediately.

That's really fascinating about the way they see, and the taste buds aspect.

Has he gotten used to your new color yet?

18. I'm afraid to do anything to my hair.
Don't want my bird to get exposed to any chemicals I guess. (she likes to snuggle on my shoulder and sometimes chew my hair)

Birds have taste buds? I was suspecting that. I'm learning lots here. :)

4. LOL...Gabby has tomato paste on his face. He needs a bath.
He loves pasta-based dishes AND pizza! :)

Do you have a clearer picture of your electus? I think you should start a thread about her, tell about the amazing differences between males and females, how many encyclopedias get the male and female backward (they do!!!) and how the male and female were thought to be entirely different species, how their feathers are different from other parrots...blah blah blah. They're an amazing species. I'd certainly like to know even more about them.

I used to breed African greys and Senegals and have spent a lot of time with many species of parrots. I have virtually no experience with eclectus parrots.

We went and ate and now, all the blood is at my stomach, not my brain. I will post that soon. I will try to compose it in a text editor first.

On edit: The pizza had a lot of garlic. My little girl loves garlic to death. :D

10. Thanks! If you have a picture or three you'd like to share...
...and you don't have web space, private message me. I'd love to host the pics.

I have this lovely artist's rendition of a female eclectus:

Plus this little pic of a male and female:

Eclectus are called that for a reason. The male and female are completely different except for body type. :)

8. I'm trying to get back to my roots. :)
I can't afford to color my hair anymore, so I decided to go with a dark blond. I'm hoping that's my "real" color so when it grows out I'll only need haircuts.

13. My ex and I had birds, and some of the budgies would freak if
Edited on Sat Apr-02-05 12:39 AM by notmyprez
he put on a hat. One budgie in particular, who was real friendly, would not go near him when he had a hat on. (just a baseball cap) Once when I had a bandage on one of my fingers, the bird wouldn't step up on my hand. We have a senegal (who lives with him) who seems to be afraid of red food, toys, etc. Fortunately, my parrotlet seems pretty cool about everything.

15. Parrotlets are little Amazons. :)
My Amazon isn't nearly as freaked as my Senegal. :) His only fears are hats, helmets, wigs (there's a story behind this one), umbrellas, bikes and motorcycles. Oh yeah, and strawberries (another story). :D
