Tattoos & Bumper Stickers always have a story, tell me yours.
It's interesting to watch people's faces as they read my bumpers while waiting for a red light to change. I'll start with my bumper stickers {btw- I'm still waiting for my DU sticker}:

I believe in Dragons, Good Men and Fantasy Creatures

Complacency Kills Mind, Body and Spirit

Enchanted

I started wanting a tattoo half a lifetime ago *warning* tattoos can be addicting because now I have a few.

My bumper stickers:

I'd rather be climbing!
1984. Read it. Don't live it.
John Kerry

My tattoos... I don't think I have any pics uploaded right now. :( I have one on my upper back, in the center, that's a nice tribal design that I liked. I always wanted one there, and I knew the 'feeling' of the one I wanted, so when I saw this one, and it was right, I got it. I have the kanji for 'strength' on my right foot, and for 'perseverance' on my left. I wanted to wait until after I hiked the AT to get those, but I started realizing that that was further and further out in my life, so I just got them.

I like that one ! Back when I read 1984, it was required reading in my high school. Considering todays politics - I wonder how many schools are still doing that.

I stopped with 3 tattoos also. So you believe that tattoos should mean something special.

I have friends who are re-inking tattoos to cover the name of an ex. I'm not fond of tattoos including the names of a significant other for that very reason.

8. I made that one myself :)
www.makestickers.com When I made it, it was just the block lettering. Two lines, white on purple. I don't know if school are still doing that... we had to read animal farm, but we definitely didn't do enough in terms of tying it in to politics and history.

For me, personally, tattoos either need to mean something or be something I've thought about for a while. I have one more I'm thinking of getting, but I'm not sure about yet, so I won't get it. It's not something I could hide as easily (it'd be my shoulder and down onto the front of my arm), and for me, that's a consideration.

I don't know that I'd ever put anyone's name on my body. I've seen people do 'memorial' tattoos for people who have died, and that would probably be the only time I'd do it. But I'm not sure I'd want that constant reminder on my body, either.

12. That one Should Be mass marketed !
I read " 1984 " in 1966 and never forgot it.

It is indeed scary when books that gave us nightmares as children become closer to reality as we grow older.

Thanks for the link. My friend has been thinking of making bumper stickers for her business.

I took care in placing my tattoos so that each of them can be easily covered with clothing. It took 30 years from the time that I started thinking about wanting a tat before I went through with getting the first one. It's been 3 years since my last one and I'm feeling like there may be more but again - I'm in no big rush.

Personally - I don't like memorial tattoos.

When I was 23, I was driving by a tattoo parlor with my boyfriend (now my husband of 16 years), and just had the impulse to go in and get one. I had one half an hour later... I never got another one. I don't regret it. It was out of character, and this was long before they were really "in".

10. My bumper stickers are pretty straightforward
"Somewhere in Texas a village is missing its idiot" and "Democratic Underground".

However, in the driver's side rear window is a neat sticker. It's about 4x6 inches and shows Alice in Wonderland peering over the edge of a mushroom upon which sits a hookah smoking caterpillar. It was on a car I bought in 1998 for $400 - a little, rusty VW Golf that I subsequently drove from Vermont to California. Part of the reason the car appealed to me was the sticker.

When that car died, I carefully peeled the sticker off and stuck it to a piece of cellophane that happened to be on the floor (it sometimes pays to be a slob). When I bought another car, the sticker went on the window.

Last year, I bought my first new car. I ceremoniously peeled the sticker off the old car and it is now displayed on this one. It's sort of a nice continuity thing and it makes every car feel comfortable and familiar.

Or maybe I'm just nuts. :silly:

42. Having a tattoo done to different parts of the body will feel differently.
The chest is one of the most painful places to place a tattoo on the body because the tattooist is working closer to a bone.

On the flip side - How do you like the look of your Dragon ?

90. It really isn't painful when it's done correctly.
Today's method uses multiple needles and the inks are safe.

The feeling of a tattoo done by a licensed, well trained tattooist really isn't bad. It only stings a little at first and then there is a warming sensation. Admittedly there are several areas of the body that are more sensitive to pain than others but the areas that are more fatty than bone or muscle really aren't bad.

My tattooist is a young woman who is very gentle and she is willing to stop working and postpone completion until another time if it does become painful. Also everyone has a different pain threshold which will affect the duration of a session. Small tattoos can be outlined and then colored in a very short time. The only problem with stopping until another time is - the tat will scab over as it should and then you must wait for it to fully heal before continuing.

Personally - I have a very low tollerance for pain. After an hour and a half, I'm looking to find a stopping point that looks good enough to live with until I return. My Snowy Owl was a two part tat and it only 4" by 2".

18. Here's my ink
Simple design -- a rose with three blossoms. One is just a bud, the second is beginning to open, and the third is full. All this is over a background of a pentagram in a circle. The whole thing is roughly nine inches from top to bottom.

The drop-shading was the artist's idea.

I got it just last year, during the Summer Solstice, having been meaning to get a tattoo like this one for more years than I care to count.

Here's a photo:

Bumper stickers are, however, another story! Before the election, I had 3 in the back window of my car: Ralph Nader for Dogcatcher, Kerry/Edwards, and a plain John Kerry. Now, just 2: DU on the left, and "He's not MY President" on the right. People rarely react to them, but I've had a few glares, and more rarely pointing and laughter.

Tattoos:
-Dolphin jumping out of water, left shoulder blade. I got that one when I was 20. Reason...When I was 13, my parents took me to Hawaii. I got to swim with dolphins. They absolutely rule.
-Heart: rather small, right hip bone. Got it last year. I was on vacation with a group of friends, we all got the same tat. A sign of friendship, I guess.

Now I really, really want a sea turtle on my lower ankle. Reason: went to Hawaii again last January, fell in love with sea turtles.

Stickers:
-DU, of course
-If You're Not Outraged, You're Not Paying Attention
-I Voted for Truth, I Voted for Kerry...actually put it over the K/E sticker, kinda wish I hadn't.
-We're All Wearing the Blue Dress Now...love this one, particularly when people don't have a clue what it means.

36. I have 3...
and would like one more. My 1st was Tinkerbell on my lower middle back. Then my husband and I had each others names tatooed underneath our wedding rings for the reaffirmation of our vows a couple years ago. The most recent is a very delicate daisy chain in pastel colors on my left bicep.
I have a Scottish emblem on the back window of my car and a Darwin fish on the right side trunk. The Darwin fish pissed off my brother-in-law who is now about as extreme into religion as I could imagine, but I'm sure he'll find a way to go even deeper. When we have family get togethers, we purposely take my car and park it where the fish will always be visable.}(

58. No Tats... just stickers...
Howard Dean..had put a Kerry sticker over this but took it off when Kerry did not contest the election results and fight for minority voting rights as he promised. If Dean does not start working on voting rights in a big way soon he may go the way of the Kerry sticker as well.

Lloyd Doggett. After Delay redistricted me I could not vote for Lloyd. However, i worked his campaign and deeply savored his victory as a kick in the butt to the jerky Texas leg that shredded Austin 3 ways to the borders to make us more republican.

65. My tats:
On my right arm:

This was my first. It says "aiki" which means harmony with energy, which I got when I was studying aikido.
I'd really like to find another dojo...

This is the kanji character for sword-"ken". I have studied both eastern and western sword arts.

On my left arm:

These are the characters for year of the rabbit (top) and year of the tiger (bottom). I fall right in between the two, depending on which calendar you go by.

The top one is the kanji for water-"misu". The bottom one is the western Zodiac sign for Aquarius-which I am. Also I am a fishery biologist, so water is kind of a theme in my life.

The Prophetess has this one on her right ankle:

It's the kanji for spirit, in Japanese-"kami".

As far as stickers go, I have too many to post pix of. Got a lot of Grateful Dead stickers, one of a dog toasting a marshmallow that says "life is good", and of course, several Democratic party and a DU sticker. Still have my Kerry/Edwards sticker up-suck on that, freepers!

69. No pictures of my tats to share.
I've always been very camera shy but I'll tell you about almost all of them.

Many years ago while walking my dog in Great Kills Park on Staten Island I spotted a Snowy Owl days before anyone knew it had migrated that far south. I said G'morning to the Owl everyday for a while as I took Bunker {shortened from moss-bunker} for his exercise. The Snowy became my totem and 20 years later my second tattoo. It was only after I carefully placed the Snowy high-up on the front of my left shoulder that I researched it's meaning in the book "Animal Speak". I couldn't have picked a better representation for who I have become.

I took a bit of liberty with the colors of a Blue Throated Long Tail Sylph Hummingbird and combined them with the beautiful colors of the endangered Black Throated Mango. The hummingbird is hovering just below my knee.

The year following my hummingbird tat - I added an opened Heavenly Blue Morning Glory flower, vine and three unopened buds very near the hummer to keep it company.

I'm an old tree hugging :hippie: who prefers the company of birds and flowers to humans at times.

67. I have a BUSH (new line) LLIT sticker, it's fun to watch people's faces
as they figure it out. Freepers generally don't.

I have two tattoos, one I got in San Diego after contemplating one for years, I got some flash that I really liked. The other I got at a tattoo party in the back of an add-on to a trailer in upstate New York, one a friend of mine and I worked out on paper minutes earlier, and I was smoking weed while getting it done.

Don't smoke weed while getting yourself poked with a needle a few hundred times a minute - for an hour.

101. she wasn't licensed
she went to a tattoo school and I let her practice on me. It came out professional looking and took about 4 hours. Just black and not too big.

and of course I bought my own new sterile needles to be used. That was 10 years ago and it's maintained it's shape. lost some of it's color though. NEVER use Neosporine on a tatoo, it will fade the black.

105. Normally ~ using an unlicensed tattooist is Not a good idea.
However you did everything you could to maintain your own health and all worked out well.:toast:

I have used Neosporine on all of my tats and the color is holding true. A good friend believes exposing the work to sunlight without a sunblock is what causes the ink to darken. I haven't found that to be true for me either.

I did recolor the yellow of my Owl's eyes but the feathers stayed white without additional ink.
