Dr Batsen D Belfry's Phantasmagorical Kitchen Experiment
OK, so I tried to make hamentaschen today. Not just your ordinary hamentaschen, but super special S'mores hamentaschen for the kids.

I made the dough. I ground up the graham crackers and mixed them with marshmallow fluff. I topped it with semisweet baking chocolate. I followed every direction.

Note to self. Fluff EXPANDS in the oven.

Taste points: 7.5
Presentation points: 1.5
Kitchen Points: -15

Needless to say, we will be applying to FEMA on Monday. I expect to get denied mostly due to party affiliation. I think our kitchen could actually be eligible.

5. It actually wasn't TOO bad.
Nothing exploded in the oven. They just oozed out the top all over the place.

I think the Ghostbusters would have been proud. If not them, certainly the Sta-Puft Marshmallow Man.

3. Hamentaschen is German/Yiddish for
"Haman's Hat"

Haman is a pseudo-biblical character who is referenced in Judaism during this time of year. Purim is a holiday that is celebrated next Thursday and Haman is a central figure in the story of Purim.

Hamantaschen are a treat central to the Purim holiday. They are sort of like a triangular cookie with a filling. I have seen cream cheese, fruit, poppy seed, nut and other varieties.

They are good. Pick some up if you have a chance!

4. I'm not Jewish, but I've had them before
A Jewish classmate brought some to school; I think they were apricot. I've also had cherry from the local grocery store in Oakmont, PA - delicious!

10. There must be, because they sell cherry and apricot at the Giant Eagle!
I live in Monroeville now; we sold our house in Oakmont in October. My husband is working in Dallas, and I'm finishing law school at Pitt and moving to Texas in May.

13. The beauty of Hamantaschen is that there are as many varieties
as there are opinions held by Jews on any given subject. It is a cultural thing. B-)

Personally, I prefer the fruit flavors, but hey, to each his/her own.

Then again, I should be on a 2-taschen diet.
