Culture clash!! the movie "Tie me up, tie me down."
Tie me up, tie me down is a Spanish movie starring Antonio Banderas in which he falls in love with a ex-porn star while he's in a mental institution. After he's released he follows her to her apartment, forces his way into the apartment, beats her, ties her up and he ends up forcing her to anything he wants. Overtime she falls in love with him and they live on happily ever after. This movie also has nudity and sex scenes that show penetration and masturbation with bathtub toys and it's, get this, a comedy in Spain?!?!?! They showed it once about three years ago on IFC and I thought it was porn that starred Antonio Banderas but in the Spanish speaking world it's a comedy. A spanish teacher told me that it's a comedy and I told her that if it was released in this country it would be banned by all major theatre's and the producers would probably have obscenity charges filed against them somewhere. It is a good movie, but the differences in cultural beliefs will shock you at first in which to me makes it a comedy.

5. They show it on the language lab computers in my college
Meanwhile the rules in my college say that if I use the computer to look up pornography I'll get kicked off of it for the rest of that quarter.
Ain't life grand.:D

12. It's an Almodovar, isn't it?
I prefered 'All About My Mother' or 'Jamon, Jamon'.
I wouldn't say there was much of a culture clash, but then I am Canadian.

13. I'm talking about US culture
You see because we allowed religous people to be free over here the snakehandlers have significant polotical power in this country so our version of the Taliban now tells us what's good for us. If they had released this movie over here in movie theatre's it would've been banned.

14. Almodovar is one of the greatest living directors in Europe
He has a huge following in both the Spanish and English speaking world. TMU-TMD is just black humor done in Almodovar's oddball way. It's not porn and was not banned. I think it played the art houses here when it was released. See the fairly recent movie, "Talk to Her" Generated lots of contoversy, well liked by most professional film critics. "All about my mother" won best foregin film if I'm not mistaken. Any serious fan or student of modern cinema should see all his films.

15. But I'm talking about the American world
In this country right now the snakehandlers would make congress have an investigation on Almodovar if he made his movies in the United States and the big production companies released them.

rather makes me cringe. Forced sex slavvy things sorta do that.... esp when she then "falls in love"... just saying... ick.

20. Spike Lee's movie "Do the Right Thing" is similar
in that white people will watch it as a dramatic piece on race relations. I tried to rent it from a Black owned video store but I couldn't find it in the drama section. Finally I was directed to the comedy section of the store.

The film has some laughs in it, but it never would have occurred to me to classify it as comedy!

21. If you live near Portland
You can see it on the big screen on April 16 & 17 at the NW Film Center. They're going to have a Pedro Almodovar film festival in April and May.

Myself, I remember seeing it in the theatre when it first came out. It was definitely offbeat, not at all what I was expecting from a Spanish comedy. I didn't know that was Antonio Banderas until recently, though.
