What foods are only available in your area?
Here, it would have to be pepperoni rolls & hot bologna sandwiches. I can do without the latter, but when I'm traveling, I crave some pepperoni rolls & can't find them anywhere!

What foods can you only find at home? (Sorry - can't get enough of the food threads today). :9

Lays? Get the hell out of here with Lay's, and do NOT darken my door with Pringles!

Not exactly to my taste, incidentally -- too gritty.

15. Gus's Pretzels - a St Louis landmark
they make standard pretzels of all shapes and sizes, but the specialty is a pretzel with a whole italian sausage baked inside. (or a hot dog or bratwurst). Its a full meal you can eat with one hand.

4. Crawfish
Its in abundance this time of year in Louisiana and Mississippi; and it is exported from this part of the country to other parts. A true delicacy if you have never had it. Yeah, they look gross, and yeah they are boiled alive but with the right spice mix they are delicious and won't fill you up. The perfect combination for potatoes, corn on the cob, a sunny afternoon and alot of beer.

7. do you have to eat the gut?

20. Hello MNFats
Pinch the tail and suck the head. Twist the body to get the meat out (which is delicious) and suck the fat from the head. I don't do the head sucking thing but crawfish meat is a delicacy. Its like eating a plateful of lobster only better. Of course, there are a million crawfish cooks in loooosiana and they all have their own recipe of various and asundry spices but ya can't beat a crawfish "berl" on the bajou. And of course, the obligatory mass quantities of beer.

11. I don't think there's anything exclusive to this area.
Some Idahoan/Boisean will come along to correct me if that's wrong.

(And I hope they do - not enough Idaho residents here at DU!)

16. Raw Sugar Cane
from the Florida State Fair. You chew the sweetness out of the stringy insides and spit out the rough stuff. It's surprisingly good.

I'd guess this can be found other places, but not many.

They have a limited range and are not in Wisconsin. I could order them online though if I really wanted them.

22. Where to begin? Poi? Shave ice? Crack seed?
Edited on Tue Mar-15-05 07:45 PM by KamaAina
the last is actually dried fruit and contains NO crack cocaine: sorry, Bush** :-)

Actually many Hawai'i delicacies, including poi, may be had in mainland communities with large Hawai'i expat populations: the Bay Area, Vegas, etc., or you can always order online.

Edit: Always be sure to spell 'cocaine' correctly, or people will talk...
