3. The most successful sports franchise ever
and their fans will never let anyone forget it.
They will cry for the firing of managers and coaches.
They will blame their pitchers
They will blame their players
They will cheap shot fans and opposing players
They will shower the opposing outfielders with garbage
They will NEVER give the OTHER team the credit they deserve.

I don't dislike the Yankees as much as I hate their fans!

7. Pot.............
kettle, black. Red Sox fans are no better, just more frustrated. The Yankees have a tradition of winning. I suppose if the Red Sox had the same tradition they'd be more vocal about the management of the team as well. When you're accustomed to losing in the post season I suppose you resign yourself to mediocrity and accept it as the norm. We Yankee fans expect much more, and our expectations are most often realized.

11. I moved here one year ago next week..................
from New York. I spent the first 52 years of my life as a New Yorker. New York is a great state, but the climate sucks. The cultural shock of moving to Florida was enormous. There's a John Birch Society billboard about 5 miles down the road from me. Most people think New York is scary, I was never scared in New York, but I'm scared as hell down here. This is no place for a Liberal.

Edited on Tue Oct-14-03 06:52 PM by maveric
Remember the Horace Clark era? 2000 fans in the stands for last place teams.
Granted the Sox have sucked more than they've been good over the past 85 years, but they always pack the bandbox on the Fens and have a great local and national following.

Edited for spelling.

4. Like to stir up trouble Will?
As a lifelong Yankee's fan, I'd take defeat the same as a fan of any other team. You single out Yankee's fans as moaners and whiners because of the Red Sox ineptitude at post season play. I suppose if I had to wait those many years I'd be jealous and bitter as well. It's not the Yankees or their fans that are responsible for the Red Sox poor performance in the past years, get over it.

9. Actually..................
as an avowed Yankee's fan, I wouldn't mind seeing a Cubs/Red Sox series this year. It would be good for baseball, and one of these perenially miserable teams would finally break their supposed "jinx" and become World Series Champions. I'd hate to be the losing team or a fan of said team though. Mass suicides and spousal abuse would no doubt ensue.

16. Well, I just hope the behavior of Yankee fans on DU improves
The Yankee fans do expect their team to perform every year-they have had the highest payroll in baseball for years, and Steinbrenner wants his money's worth.

I have very good friends from NY who are lifelong Yankee fans and really love the tradition. Unfortunately, it seems that the DU Yankee fans enjoy antagonizing the Sox fans on this board more than enjoy the long tradition of great baseball played at Yankee stadium.

23. So long SUCKERS!!

Great line when Dave was in Vegas Once. To start the show Clavert Deforest comes out and puts a quarter in a big slot machine he says,"If it pays off we'll split it"

The crowd goes wild, he pulls the arm, it pays off big time, he scoops up all the money and yells, "SO LONG SUCKERS!!!" and walks off.

Deforest was "discovered in a NYU anti-VD film and the staff got him to be on the show. Apparently he was making too much money from doing the show and at one time and if I remember the story correctly he was volunteering at some sort of health clinic but too much to be working there. It was something like that I think Dave and NBC got their lawyers to work it out.

30. Defeat wouldn't be humiliating (or, Will Pitt, the Little Lamb)
We'd shake hands, and say good show.

Will Pitt and the Boston fans are like Nietzsche's little lambs, bleating away their soul-withering resentment: "Yankees bad; therefore, we're good!" This is, of course, the slave revolt in morality - taken to its extreme in a baseball context. But only the loser Red Sox fans could cry, moan, and gnash teeth - they are the true lovers of the slave morality. But they seriously misunderstand the Masters if they think we are the same.

The Red Sox fans hate the Yankees with a burning hatred that could only fester in the hearts of the little lambs. But the Yankee fans don't understand: Why all the hate? We do not hate the Red Sox at all. As Nietzsche says, "we don't dislike them at all, these good little lambs; we even love them: nothing is more tasty than a tender lamb..." (On the Genealogy of Morals, Essay 1, Part 13)

;-)

51. Yankee fans do not hate the Red Sox
They have no need to. We've dominated the pathetic Red Sox for damn near a century. Why hate the little lamb? It is so tender and so sweet. This does not mean, of course, that the Yankees don't dominate the Red Sox, or that the Yankee fans don't rile the Red Sox fans. One cannot blame a bird of prey for being a bird of prey. We just don't hate them. We even love them. They're so cute, cuddly, and tasty. ;-)

(PS - Some of you Red Sox folks need a sense of humor, BTW. At least Will Pitt has that. This is all in good fun anyway, so a few of the vein-poppers above are just bizarre...they can only be explained by the resentment of the little lambs, really).

35. One question.
If the Yankees win, will every Red Sox fan on these boards be gracious? I suspect not, as not every Red Sox fan has been gracious on the boards, thus far. Perhaps a few Yankee fans have been a bit nastier than the few Sox fans who push the envelope. Perhaps not. But elements of grace and ugliness exist within both fan bases. They exist within all fan bases.

Regardless of who wins, I suspect that some (on the losing side) will hide, some will get ugly, but many will gracefully acknowledge their congratulations to the fans of the victorious team. This has been my experience in the past. I hope I don't see a big change from that.

38. Most Red Sox Fans HAVE Been pretty gracious on DU
unfortunately, the Yankee fans have lived up to their arrogant reputation. Many of us Sox fans have been labeled animals, morons, Republicans, and losers-nothing like generalizing about a whole region. I love NY, respect the Yankees as a team, dislike Steinbrenner (as do many Yankee fans) and want to see my team do well. The nastiness and personal attacks are unwarranted-can we please save the venom for the neo-cons and freepers?

Again, the nastiness and labeling seems to come from a vile few, not from the majority of DU Yankee fans. Let's not generalize where generalizations aren't warranted. That only allows us to fall to the level of the nasties.

46. I agree...
...that the majority of nastiness has come from Yankee fans, though they are not alone by any means. I still maintain that this ugliness comes from a few vehement trollers and not the majority of fans. I haven't been able to count more than five or six supposed Yankee fan posters in the nasty category, which is why I'm sticking to the "mean minority" theory.

Anyway, just to note it, in case it needs noting: I'm not a Yankee fan. After all, I'm a midwest boy who was brought up right. ;) I do admit that I like many of the current lot of everyday players on the Yankees (no, not Giambi), but I have no dog in the ALCS. I am a baseball fan, however, and dearly appreciate the current series. Hmm. Blah. Blah. Blah.

Besides, I'm focusing all my energy on hope for a dominating victory by Mark Prior and the Cubs this evening.

Cheers!

even though expectations are high, as they are every year. Personally, I fear more the result of losing (a Steinbrenner tantrum) than actually losing.

George will most likely dump Torre if he does not deliver this year. The rest of the coaching staff will follow, except Willie Randolph and Lee Mazzili...maybe.

41. Don't Count on It-Close Games, Evenly Matched Teams
The Sox bats have been cold, and the Yankee starting pitchers aren't what they used to be-Clemens and Pettite being the exceptions. We can hit Wells usually-he HATES Fenway for that reason-so don't count them out yet.

The Yankees are only batting .194 this series, and the Sox a measley .264. They love Wells' fastball.

43. I'd like to think that the more enlightened ones are here on DU...
The typical Red Sox troll over at the Yankee usenet group (alt.sports.baseball.ny-yankees) appears to be a member of the Aryan Nation or Ann Coulter's love slave. I can't believe that there are that many people in MA who have such nasty political views - which may say more about the nature of trolls than Red Sox fans in general.

As for Yankees fans (which I've been one since 1966), I assume that they'll be plenty pissed if they lose. But, hopefully, the ones at DU will be gracious and wish the Red Sox fans luck. Personally, I think that any state with the wisdom to vote for George McGovern in 1972 deserves a Baseball World Series win!
