Adult Swim: Destroying Television, Toon by Toon - NYTimes

i watch adult swim religiously...aqua teen and family guy are prolly my al time fave cartoons right now, any other adult swim fans on DU?

-snip-

AT 11 o'clock each night, after the Powerpuff Girls have been put to bed and Scooby-Doo has curled up in a corner, the Cartoon Network becomes a strange place. From this hour until the early morning, a red-eyed viewer will not see combative cats and mice or rascally rabbits, but rather an anthropomorphic milk shake that argues with space aliens, a high-tech underwater lab where no one can find the fuse box, and a small-town mayor who protects his city's streets by littering them with bear traps.

This is the unconventional, unpredictable sensibility of "Adult Swim," the channel's late-night programming block aimed at animation fans who are grown-ups in age only. Since its premiere in 2000, "Adult Swim" has struck numerous perplexed channel-surfers as unintelligible madness, yet there is a consistent, if counterintuitive, method to the shows that constitute it: by turning its airwaves over to creative teams with no background in cartoons, it has repeatedly yielded programs that push the boundaries of what animation can do.

Seth Green, who played Scott Evil in the "Austin Powers" movies and is the newest initiate of the "Adult Swim" fraternity, is typical of the lineup's producers as well as its audience members: he is young, male and incurably addicted to all forms of media. His stop-motion, animated series, "Robot Chicken," (which had its premiere on Feb. 20) uses action figures to satirize retro childhood idols like the Smurfs and G. I. Joe, alongside more contemporary targets like the reality show "Blind Date" and the BBC sitcom "The Office." As inventive and willfully arbitrary as "Robot Chicken" is, Mr. Green says that those same qualities would make the program a tough fit on almost any other network. " 'Adult Swim' is one of the few places that is allowing people to take chances in any medium, not just cartoons," he said. "Their argument is, 'You wouldn't get this on any other channel, but we'll do it.' "

"I've always wanted to destroy television," said Mike Lazzo, Cartoon Network's senior vice president
for programming and production, and the arbiter of all that is "Adult Swim." A 20-year veteran of Turner Broadcasting (who started in that company's shipping department), Mr. Lazzo's earliest efforts at dismantling the medium came in the form of Cartoon Network's first original series, "Space Ghost Coast to Coast." When it had its debut in 1994, "Coast to Coast" was a crude talk-show parody that mixed bits of recycled animation from Hanna-Barbera's 60's-era superhero cartoon "Space Ghost," with videotaped interviews of such off-kilter celebrities as Adam West and Willie Nelson. But its producers quickly tired of using Space Ghost to send up routines they had seen on Leno and Letterman. "There was an ongoing debate," Mr. Lazzo said, "over whether or not the character should be used in a more conventional talk-show setting, or whether he was the king of Dada."

1. LOL..If the NYT hates it
Edited on Sun Mar-13-05 11:25 AM by ewagner
it MUST be doing something right........

Yes, I admit it. I'm a faithful viewer....thre's something strangely compelling about ATHF...and Meatwad reminds me of my relatives......and with the Bush* administration in power, I ask you, is the Mayor in Tom Visits the Mayor really so unbelievable? Are the incompetetent ramblings of the crew of Sealab 2021 any worse than the incompetetence of the CIA? The FBI ?

Who is REALLY insane? Adult Swim or Washington DC?

2. my teens love it
often they watch with dad. the youngest is 11, but with a house full of teens, there is smut and crap on all day long. i have long since given up on the notion of what is appropriate for kids to see. never was a good censor, anyway.
but dad loves the stuff, too. so saturday night is often dad and the kids watch adult swim time. they love it.
i don't watch too much myself. but i am for any form of subversion.

Mainly because it has entirely blurred the line between genius and insanity.

4. I watch the action/anime mostly
I like the William Street stuff too, what it lacks is production value it makes up for in cleverness. Sometimes it's even funny; except Robot Chicken, that show just sucks.

5. "It's ***weird*** and ***different*** "
"Some people acting weird and other people being sane and the sane people looking at the not-sane people and having reality kind of fall apart around them."

(All quotes from the 22 year old who came along while I was reading this and started looking over my shoulder.)

"It's kind of hard to put into words. There's something going on. The placards have a lot to do with it. It's the attitude."

(I get the feeling we're back in "Something's happening here but you don't know what it is, do you, Mr. Jones" territory. And the Times is naturally as clueless as ever.)

6. i love it
Animation is another form of media and also art, i am glad they are bring acceptance of anime without diluding it for children so the original show isint lost (even pokemon had girls in almost nothing swimsuits, transgender-isim out the wazoo, and homosexuality all in a comedic setting)

16. Anime or at least the dialogue is diluted once it's on Cartoon
Network. I have a friend who is a big time Inuyasha fan and I used to download the episodes via bit torrent right after they aired in Japan. They were already subbed and the English subtitles are much different than the English dubbing once it is bought by the Cartoon Network. There are sexual allusions that don't make it to American TV when it has been dubbed.

10. Speaking as a 51 y.o. woman
I'm very fond of Adult Swim. I especially like Sealab2021, though I miss the original, late lamented Capt. Murphy. I also like ATHF though I find it's unwise to snack while watching it: there are some images that make me queasy, and a lot of them have to do with Carl. I appreciate what Tom Goes To The Mayor tries to do, though I don't find it, how you say, funny. It's painful, sometimes in a good way. Robot Chicken, as another poster stated, sucks. It's Celebrity Deathmatch rehashed. The humor underwhelms.

I have watched all the offerings at least once, but my favorite part is the bumpers. They are the magic behind the programming. They let the viewers connect with the creators in a TV blog atmosphere. By overlooking the bumpers the NYT completely misses the point of Adult Swim. It isn't just nonanimators creating animation, it's TV community. One-to-one emotional marketing, as the professionals call it. Keep watching as other channels start to copy it.
