I also like natural colors, though I should be out painting the town red, it's a bit hard to do though knowing how important certain issues have become - hard to celebrate. You know.

But I like blue too. I used to paint and do pastels. I was painting portraits in shades of single colors for awhile. One of my best is "Lady in Blue", a small painting of a jazz singer soulfully singing into one of those old huge microphones. I stopped painting in 1988 and say often I'm going to start again. There are few things more theraputic than passionately losing onself to the work to emerge with something new there before you, something artful, made by your hand, something that captures and fixes one's passion outside of the self and in the world. Great therapy!! In these times when it is (geniunely) hard to celebrate, maybe you should do something of the same?

Do you paint? (Canvas, that is.) Paint, draw, sing; make intensely artful quilts; cook exquisite meals. Get out and walk under blue skies and between green trees. Breath!

There is a centeredness to a joyful life that is hard to turn from.

Christian or not, given the issues we face, just enjoy this...

134. I stopped painting...

...because I couldn't make a living at it. I was also writing at the time (poetry) with little success. I broke up with my girlfriend at that time, who painted and acted in those days. We used to spend long afternoons painting side-by-side (she taught me a lot) with everything from Patti Smith's Horses to Haydn's Violin Concertos to Paroah Sanders' Karma ("the creator has a master plan/peace and happiness across the land!") blasting on the stereo. Things were good in those days. When we broke up it left me deeply despaired. The walls of my studio had a mix of my paintings and blank spots where she'd taken hers down. I tore them all down and moved away. I kept reading Rimbaud (from The Wastelands of Love)...

I went out into the endless city. (O fatigue!) Drowning in the deaf night and in flight from happiness. It was like a winter night, with a fall of snow to smother the world with precision. I cried to friends: "Where is she hiding?" and they gave me false answers. I stood before the windows of the place where she goes every night; I ran through an endless garden. Everywhere I was turned away. At all of this I cried incessantly. I went down at last to a place full of dust, where I sat upon the girders, and in that night wept out all the tears in my body -- yet my tears returned, to be wept out again and again.

I understood that she had returned to her everyday life; that mercy would turn in its orbit more slowly than any sun. She never came back, will never come back, my adorable, who visited me in my room -- which I would never have thought possible. This time, believe me, I cried more than all the children in the world.

You see I was truly heartbroken. I became bitter. I decided I would "make money and buy myself a blonde". I ripped up most of my paintings as a way to separate myself from the life I just left (I still have a few). I stopped painting cold turkey and got myself a job as a salesman for a computer company (what a mistake! though I did make some money). It took me 2 years to get over her.

Since then I've had my ups and downs; married a lovely woman who doesn't paint; adopted 2 special-needs high-maintenance kids; got a mortgage, a wiemeraner, and a labrador retriever; took up bicycling (used to ride 3,000+ miles a year -- my best century is 5.5 hours -- but I've slowed down as I've gotten older). Time has been an issue.

I still have my brushes but my wife (Kriss) threw out my considerable supply of paints a couple of years ago. She said they were as hard as rocks (they were 15 years old). Those brushes keep calling me. Every once in awhile I pull out the paintings and sketches I managed to hold on to and I think, not bad, I want to do this again. Soon, I say; any day now. I will paint again.

I learn from all of you. Just look around. Whether it be here or out during your daily travels. Watch and learn. There's so much good in everyone, yet the wicked ones are hiding in plane sight. When you research, things become a bit too surreal.

And, it's not how long we're here, but what we do with that time while we're here. I got that one off of those movies... too tired to think of the name of them. Saving the world, with the kids... darn, filmed in New Zealand.
