Nicole DeHuff, an actress who played Teri Polo's sister in Meet the Parents, has died of causes related to pneumonia. She was 30.

The actress died Feb. 16 in Hollywood, four days after she reportedly checked into a Los Angeles hospital, was misdiagnosed and sent home with orders to take Tylenol.

When her condition worsened, she returned to the hospital and was prescribed antibiotics for bronchitis and again sent home. Two days later, paramedics were called to her home after she collapsed, gasping for breath. By the time she reached the hospital, she was unconscious and passed away soon after.

Meet the Parents marked DeHuff's feature-film debut. She played Deborah Byrnes, the sister whose wedding prompts Gaylord "Greg" Focker's (Ben Stiller) visit to girlfriend Pam Byrne's (Polo) childhood home to attend the ceremony and, as suggested by the title, meet the parents.

Having a bit part in a movie does not make you rich.

6. You're probably right. My comment was kinda rude anyway.
There was no need to bring politics into this thread.

8. No worries
I knew what you meant, I just know a lot of people who work in film, so I know that they don't always make a lot of money, even though it may seem like they do.

It is a cruel irony that healthy people in their 30s can die of pneumonia but it happened to a friend. He thought he had the flu or a cold and since he was a strong healthy young man, he thought he could just rest at home and shrug it off. By the time he realized that he was in danger, it was too late, and he died. His family has always believed if he'd been not quite so healthy and a bit quicker to go to the hospital, he would have lived because of early treatment.

But it seems, from this story, that even getting medical treatment wouldn't guarantee getting help soon enough, since doctors and emergency rooms tend to brush off claims of pneumonia from healthy young people.

Indeed, many years ago I was turned away from an ER myself and became severely ill. Two weeks later, I finally received treatment for my pneumonia. I lost a dangerous amount of weight and took a long time to recover.

When ER's and hospitals are being shut down all over the place for economic reasons, doctors have to make hard decisions, and they naturally assume the best place for the young person is at home.

It is very sad.

and other subversives. We intend to clean them out,
even if it means rounding up every birdwatcher in the country.

9. Interesting, and sad. I also contracted pneumonia, kept going
back to the doc, and she only thought to do a chest x-ray after I mentioned that a coworker had been diagnosed with pneumonia. To this day I wonder how sick I would have had to have gotten before she would think, "pneumonia!"

10. I have had this situation happen to me three times and have been lucky!
First time, I was pregnant and my OB/GYN's ignored my toxemia and even discharged me ill from the hospital after my son's birth...ended up at the hospital 2 days later in congestive heart failure...would have died had I not woken up ..

Third time, I had a bad "flu"...got sicker and sicker...went to one hospital with a 102 temperature (adults shouldn't have these types of temps)...and had severe tiredness...was told to drink more fluids and go home...day later....I go to another hospital...I had a liver disease that needed to be treated properly...

Fourth time...It took 3 visits to the same ER to get the proper treatment for an asthma problem I was experiencing....it was horrible....by the third visit I was admitted for 3 days in the hospital....
