Have a pet door? Your thoughts re: sliding glass door vs. a window screen
I've heard of pet doors that you can put in a window screen. Does anyone have one of these? We've been thinking about getting a sliding-glass-door panel, but I just remembered the window screen kind and would like to hear some opinions. Thanks!

1. I've seen them at the pet store
it's an insert that your sliding panel locks onto and it locks onto the frame. It just doesn't look like something I'd ever leave in place when I was away from the house, and when I'm there I just let the critters in and out whenever they want anyway.

2. We have one for our 2 cats and it's great!
East to install.

Get at Home Depot or Lowe's

We live in a condo w/ a screened in balcony. Put the litter box on the balcony and the cats go out to "play" on the balcony or use litter box. No odors here!

If you get one, don't expect your pets to use it straight away bec ours took about a week to adapt (w/ a little coaxing).

I think they cost about $125.

We love it.

3. We'd put it in one of the basement windows -- but then we'd have to find a
locking device, since that window unlocked would prove just like a door to a burglar.

The door sets into the screen, right? How do you think it would do w/ the traffic of six cats?

4. Ours fits into sliding GLASS doors (live in FL and seldom open
the doors - AC). I think these units fit into sliding screens as well.

6 cats? I am jealous. They should do fine. Are they indoor/outdoor or both?

Ours are indoor cats so the idea of putting the litter box on the balcony is wonderful.

Don't like the basement idea bec of burglars and other critters (possums, raccoons etc.)that could "visit" you.

6. That's the other kind we're thinking about getting.
I hadn't considered basement window/critters getting in. Thanks.

They've been strictly indoor but the stress is making us get them microchipped and let them become indoor/outdoor. Our house is too small for six, but twice we've been unable to say "no."
