Why I took ballet lessons.
Actually, as a kid, I wanted to be a tap dancer, but my teacher insisted I study ballet. It paid off in many ways.

And it's good exercise too.

1. Great commercial.
YOu wouldn't see that on American TV, though.

I'd be thrilled if my sons wanted to take ballet...

2. I didn't want them.
But it's the best education there is for your body. Totally isometric. Great for control.

There's also a lot of truth to that ad.

3. I've never understood the reluctance of American men to
even attend a ballet performance.

I say, "Hey, it's mostly young women in skimpy costumes," but too many of them are into this "real men don't..." mindset that they're convinced that they'll suddenly lose their manhood if they step into a ballet theater (or, more likely, the other guys will tease them about being gay, which is a fate worse than death, obviously).

4. I took my junior high students to Dance Theater of Harlem.
The kids, especially those that were into break dancing, were blown away. To bad they are not currently performing. They were one of the world's great dance companies.

Arthur Mitchell, the director, recruited male dancers by promising them they would be able to dunk a basketball.
