1. It's "Lifetime Achievement Award" time for Scorcese
Edited on Sun Feb-27-05 11:36 PM by terrya
I agree. If you can't win for films like "Raging Bull" and "Taxi Driver", it just isn't going to happen. That's a shame, but I guess Eastwood deserves it.

4. Poor Scorsese
This is the third time he's lost to an actor-director -- he lost to Robert Redford in 1981 and Kevin Costner in 1991. I'm sure as soon as he saw that Eastwood was on the list, he figured he'd better start practicing his gracious loser face.

I'm guessing the rightwing will be apoplectic tomorrow.

16. They always give it to the actor-turned-director...
...who is a white male Hollywood insider. If there is violence involved in the movie, so much the better.

Robert Redford, Warren Beatty, Kevin Costner, Clint Eastwood, and Mel Gibson all have Best Director Oscars. Hitchcock and Lubitsch didn't, and neither does Scorsese. He's in good company, but this has to hurt terribly.

Dammit, dammit, dammit!!!!

As much as I respect Clint Eastwood, the way they've been ignoring Marty time after time is just too much. It makes me sad.

The Aviator was the hell of a movie.

3. I don't know. I think Scorcese deserved it for Aviator.
It was a phenomenal movie. There's an unfortunate bias against Scorcese in Hollywood.

5. Why do you think they are biased against Marty?
Is he too much of an outsider? Too independent?

11. I agree. I think "Aviator" was much better than "Million Dollar Baby"
I also think that the directing was amazing. "Million Dollar Baby" was a good movie but, in my opinion, not best picture. I also hated the ending -- it felt too much like a "TV Movie"...something you might see on Lifetime.

13. Word!

The Oscars, may I remind everyone, is just a show in which the industry honchos come out blowing each other, and make up for lost cash in movies that didn't do so well in the box office ("Finding Neverland"? Please!!!)

And the best part is that, as biased, unfair, and weird these awards can be, they still make a bundle of money with the award show alone! They are marketing geniouses!

20. Agreed. Scorcese is *above* the Oscars.
Someday they'll give him a "lifetime achievement" award, but for some reason Hollywood almost never recognizes the best directors out there.

8. Maybe this will encourage him to stop making hack films.
Edited on Sun Feb-27-05 11:44 PM by sleipnir
He probably will never make another Raging Bull level project, but the Aviator blew ass. I'm sorry, but it was a horrible picture for Marty, it just wasn't his style at all. Which goes to show, never come onto a picture late in the game, especially trying to match up against Michael Mann.

10. "The Aviator" was a good film, not his best, but good.
And a good Scorsese film is often better than other directors' best.

15. I disagree, The Aviator was a great film
Edited on Sun Feb-27-05 11:53 PM by Julius Civitatus
Scorsese has made some ass-sucking flicks too in his illustrious career, I won't deny it, but I enjoyed The Aviator throughly. I thought it was the heck of a movie.

12. I had a cursing, shouting post in the main Oscar thread here.
I only watched the Oscar hoping Marty would finally get his due. I haven't stopped cursing yet. He's going to be making a film in Boston this spring; now I'll have to hope that one will do it. It's hard to believe such a talented director has never been recognized as best director, especially for films like "Goodfellas" and "Raging Bull."

14. Actor/directors always win
Not to take anything away from Clint, but if an actor is nominated for best director, he will win, 9 times out of 10.

17. I can't believe they gave it to Kevin Costner over Marty
"Dancing with Wolves" got it over "Goodfellas."

There is no god, people. There is no god.

18. Well, HITCHCOCK Never Got One
And, different considerations:

1) He godfathered Elia KAZAN (McCARTHY namer) on stage for Lifetime Achievement, which was deserved, but on ideological grounds-phooey.

2) I never liked the Godfather thing of (my interpretation: ) glorifying murderous thugs by making them seem more human (you know, having family-lives and loving opera).

3) I *do* appreciate Taxi Driver.

4) I *do* appreciate Gangs of NY.

Nighty night - don't flame me in my dreams, O.K.?

19. That Kazan moment was pretty excruciating.
Edited on Mon Feb-28-05 12:00 AM by CBHagman
A great director, yes, but he had been honored more than once with the Best Director award, and there are so many others who are deserving.

I recall that when Scorsese gave the award to Kazan, the camera turned to the audience, where Amy Madigan refused to join in the applause and had the angriest look on her face. It was then I knew she was on our side, ideologically speaking.

As for Kazan, the more I hear about him as a person, the more I dislike him.

21. Yeah, the I-was-a-contender Movie Was Great
but a greater movie would be to explore KAZAN's wingnutty traitorness of his pals.

22. It doesn't matter who wins the statue....what matters is the nomination.
The TV show announcement is just the popularity contest. If you consider all 5 nominees as the winners, then it makes more sense.
