Why is bashing vegans OK, but not retarded people or fat asses?
I've seen lectures on this board about how we shouldn't use the word "retard" jokingly because someone on the board might have a retarded cousin and it might make them sad. And we shouldn't make fat jokes because there might be a chubster reading it and he might cry.

And yet every single day there is at least one thread (not necessarily in the Lounge) that ridicules those who choose not to eat murdered animals and mocks organizations that work for the protection of such animals.

I'm just trying to figure out who we are allowed to ridicule and who we aren't. From what I gather so far, it's OK to bash vegans and vegetarians, but we're not to ridicule the obese person who eats dead animal carcass and then wonders why his body looks like a giant jiggly tub of animal fat and he can't get a girlfriend.

Right?

6. Well...
Vegans (not all, the militant ones) seem to enjoy making people who eat meat feel guilty and ashamed at their dietary preference. I don't know how you would react, but I don't much enjoy being called a murderer because I choose to eat a steak every once in while. Vegans do that, generally speaking. I have yet to be slammed by a retarded person for having all my faculties or by a obese person for not being as large as they.

When I became a veg, I would just mention it to people and they would get defensive, when I didn't say anything but "I don't eat meat." THEY got defensive, not me.

No one can MAKE you feel guilty. You probably just do.

God gives man seed bearing fruit to eat, and domination over animals. But I guess you see those two things the same.

Oh ya, he gives man domination over women too. I guess that means we can eat them?

Governments have domination over their people (even fair democratic nations). What does that say?

incident with the "apple" and animal skins were used to cover up the nakedness of Adam and Eve - and then God did the killing. In the "dominion" passage of Genesis 1 there is no mention of killing and eating animals. So I fail to see the connection between dominion and eating animals. In fact - other cases of dominion in the Bible - such as masters over slaves - do not imply that the master has the right to kill the slave.

On edit: But I hope you are not going to use the Bible to try and make a case for not killing animals. You won't get very far there. In fact, look no farther than the Cain and Abel story and see whose "sacrifice" was accepted by God. Also, there is all of that clean-unclean animal stuff. Lots of killing and of animals for eating and sacrificing there, and all in spite of that pesky, "Thou shalt not kill" commandment.

116. yes there is a lot about killing animals
once the whole ark thing happened. this is long after the original fall from grace.

In Eden, when humans were pure, they did not eat animals. It was only after they fell that they began eating animals.

So really, if we wish to go back to the perfect state, we should stop eating meat right? HAHAHA flame away!

I'm not sure what you're saying exactly -- I agree that dominion does not involve killing -- my other references to killing are to make it clear that dominion does NOT allow that...

Am I not understanding something in you post?

BTW: The Bible has no influence over my reasons, but it comes up so often I looked into it.

131. I am saying that you can't equate killing animals with murder
ans no amount of "well the animal killers wrote the definition so it doesn't count." is going to work, I am afraid. The fact is, you can't make a historical argument against killing animals for food. If you want to argue that we are more advanced socially so that we should no longer kill animals, fine, that is at least an honest argument. I wouldn't agree with you because I think it is mostly based on sentimentality (turns all animals into "pets") rather than reason but it is a better argument than trying to change the historical definition of murder. On the sentimentality issue, answer me this: Does the killing and eating of a cow upset you more than the killing and eating of a crab? If so, why?

139. well....
since you asked ::takes big breath::

There is archeological evidence that we were vegetarians before the Ice Age, at which time food became scarce. For that reason we started eating meat. It's a theory -- just like so many other things. I'll admit it's a theory, but it does have support.

I would also say we are advanced to where we don't need to eat it anymore. I also like that argument.

I'm not sure if you use the crab thing as a trick, as I understand crabs to be like insects (possibly no nervous system). I've had a few people bring that up.

Either way, I don't eat them. I don't eat anything from the animal kingdom. That's just a much easier definition.

150. Crabs are similar to insects (both arthropods). They certainly DO have a
nervous system. My point is that many people draw the line at animals with big brown eyes because they think they are more like humans and they think therefore that they are human-like in the way they think and feel. - a sentimental mistake, in my opinion.

to wipe my butt, let alone to argue a rational point. Someone else brought it up.

The fact that humans shouldn't eat animals comes from common decency. WE WANT TO and WE CAN aren't good enough reasons. We're supposed to be better than that. That's what separates us from the primates.

Every nutrient necessary to keep us alive and healthy can be found in the ground or on trees.

145. I really wouldn't get into comparing our morality to the "primates" if
I were you. For one thing, we ARE primates. For another, I don't see the other primates running around killing each other the way humans do. And lastly - you bring up a good point - we are animals and we have a biological imperative just like other animals. All of the biological, historical, anthropological, social evidence points to the fact that humans are omnivores. So it is a little simplistic to say we eat meat because we "want to or can." It is way more complex than that and if you keep trying to deny the complexicity of the issue you will keep failing to convince anyone to your way of thinking.

not quite the same as killing it. It speaks of responsibility, the way a parent is granted dominion over her children. Humans are supposed to be protecting the animals, not killing them.

Purely anecdotal but, nearly every vegan I know is constantly getting sick. Several have anemia. One vegan friend of mine recently had to be hospitalized due to his diet for anorexia; even though he thought he was eating enough, his body wasn't getting enough nutrients.

There's a reason humans are carnivores.

Really? What's the reason?

Is it our long intestinal structure where meat decays and rots? Is it our inability to digest meat properly with only a limited amount of natural enzymes present in the stomach?

Explain this:

If you were stranded on a deserted island and the only two things available to eat were a bushel of apples or a rabbit that had been dead for a week, which would you eat? If any other carnivore on earth was in the same situation, which would they eat?

99% of all fat people claim to have a "glandular" problem and 99% of them don't.

The way you can tell them from the 1% with an actual disorder is that they are the ones who can't sit through a movie without eating, can't walk through the mall without eating, can't sit through 30 minutes of a work day without eating, etc.

Mentally handicapped people and most obese people are not that way by choice. Vegans choose that lifestyle, the obese and the mentally-challenged do not choose theirs, any more than gays choose to be gay.

People see it as acceptable to bash differing ideologies and beliefs but not characteristics one is born with.

Also, many vegans proseletize their beliefs in LTTE etc. I've never seen anyone urging others to adopt a "retarded" or an obese lifestyle but plenty of vegans will argue all day long that they are correct and you're wrong.

48. I agree with the distinction you make
Though I try to stay away from name-calling in general (with the exception of when the names apply to right-wing nuts, etc.), the distinction you make makes sense.

>>People see it as acceptable to bash differing ideologies and beliefs but not characteristics one is born with.>> sums it up pretty well. That doesn't necessarily make it right, but I believe that's why things are as they are.

85. Yeah, but...
...what about people like me who eat all kinds of unhealthy junk and don't exercise enough but don't get fat because of fast metabolism? Sure, I agree there's a difference between those who are overweight because they are born with an inclination towards it vs. those who get that way by choice, but I don't think that makes it "right" to bash them simply because the affects of this lifestyle choice happen to show for them. If it's to get them to change their behavior, don't non-overweight slobs deserve the same name-calling and attacks? :-) Anyway, that's just my take.

BTW, in case it sounds this way, this post isn't meant to be hostile towards you. Just at how ridiculous this situation is in general. I just figured most here could agree that name-calling is a negative and pointless thing to do, even when it feels good. :-)

148. Seems to me what's severely lacking in this thread is TOLERANCE.
Edited on Tue Feb-22-05 05:21 PM by blondeatlast
I'm much the same way. Most people would call me "lucky," but I'm subjected to plenty of scorn because I come close to the cultural "ideal." It's often assumed I watch what I eat very carefully (no one would look at me and think I have an eating disorder, though; I'm slender but HEALTHY) and exercise to excess--neither is true.

The OP proved her/his lack of tolerance with the terminolgy used, and the respondents proved their lack of tolerance by being defensive.

FWIW, my husband was raised Hindu and has been a veg all his life. He has NEVER given me crap about eating meat. He doesn't like it, of course, but he's--

TOLERANT of it.

Edit: make that Hindu, of course.

109. How about the fact that many of the same
overweight people who are shoveling food down their throats actually suffer from a mental disorder?
Would you make fun of a drug addict?
Would you make fun of someone suffering from depression?
Food, for some, is their drug of choice. Most drugs you can choose to stay away from. Food is harder.
They also have been doing some newer research stating that there are a number of overweight people who suffer from depression or who do not know how to handle stress properly. Either way, food becomes the only way to deal with it.
I have never called a vegan a name. I have always applauded their choice of a healthy lifestyle. Some of the things that I have read are rather disappointing.

21. Your post may be a clue
"not to eat murdered animals"

It's because Vegans themselves constantly talk from a high horse and deride, explicitly or implicitly, those who eat meat (it's simply unavoidable that it would be that way, since vegans became vegans because they have a problem with eating meat -- most of them a "moral" problem) -- so it's only natural to expect a counter-reaction. Fat people or retarded people don't.

This isn't to say that I agree with bashing Vegans. But I'm not surprised.

but I will tell you that the ladies you work with probably are not trying to make you fat.
I worked with a lady who, if she liked you, would make all kinds of fattening things. Why? It was her way (that she felt acceptable) to show you that she cared.
They might be calling you skinny as a complement. Or, they might know that so many people are on diets (some when they don't need to be) and think that by complimenting you, it will boost your self-esteem to be accepting of how you look.
Not an expert here-I used to work with many farmers wives who view a situation like that exactly as I described it.

Well, maybe not retarded, but I am a bit of a lard-ass lately, and I am a proud omnivore (who only eats family-farm-raised animal products), so I'll chip in my $.02.

Most vegetarians/vegans I know are not the judgemental type-- in fact, I've eaten hamburgers right in front of them with not so much as a smirk from their mouths.

But when you start passing judgement on somebody based solely on her/his dietary choices, you've crossed a line. So don't be suprised if they don't get defensive when you start calling them "calf-killers" or some such thing. You're only making yourself a target.

BTW, it's widely known that Hitler was a vegetarian. So please don't make blanket assumptions about people based on their diets.

Hitler's diet was primarily vegetarian throughout the latter part of his life; however, he didn't adopt a vegetarian diet for moral reasons, but because he suffered from gastric problems.

You can call it slaughter or murder....it's all semantics. When you take the life of another living being, it's all the same regardless of your desperate attempts to rationalize it.

it this time? I am confused.

That's a pretty dog. I'm hungry.

Eating your dog is no different than eating a tomato, right?

133. It must be, again, the lack of my intellectual capacity...
...but seems like your argument is entirely made up of emotional prejudices.

So, you're not against killing living beings... But only ANTHROPOMORPHIC living beings? Ain't that a little, um, elitist? Homo-centric?

121. Oh Brother!
>> So I'm guessing that if someone rips the head off that cute little puppy, you will naturally not press charges. <<

Absurd. And even with ridiculous comparisons like that the Peta kooks wonder why they are ridiculed.

>> What if they intend to eat it? That should be OK, right? <<

Beef-ranch cattle and poultry-farm chickens are not companion animals. Nor are they your (or my) personal property. Pity you don't understand the difference.

>> Dogs are certainly edible and many say they are quite yummy. <<

LOL! Certainly. Mmmm. Yummy. Dogs and wolves are eaten in many parts of the world. So what?

And pigs make wonderful pets too... but I eat "murdered :eyes: pig carcasses" too. Some folks keep chickens for pets. But I eat them too. Often.

>> it's all the same regardless of your desperate attempts to rationalize it. <<

Oh brother! You should probably be told that the only thing "desperate" around here are the attempts to equate animals with human beings.

Animals are not humans. Animals are not people. They are not equal.

97. Funny I don't see hardly any threads which insult vegans
but there are tons of insensitive morons who like to ridicule fat people--you know even your lovely comments. By the way, I know a few fat vegetarians. I don't think we should insult any person or group. It's a shame in standing up for vegans you decided to insult fat people.

It's kind of funny actually, how 'bout I just stir the sh*t a little more and say old people can't drive and poor people are lazy? And......go!

OK, kidding. Seriously, maybe its just the fact that most people, for as much as they like to pat themselves on the back for being enlightened and sensitive to others, are usually just as ignorant and narrow-minded and oblivious to others' feelings as everyone else. Thus people will complain about insulting vegans but will laugh at fat people. Fat people will complain about insulting retared people but make fun of vegans. Not to sound like a dirty smelling hippie (b/c its still okay to make fun of hippies...really) maybe everyone needs to put a little more effort into not being complete assholes to each other all the time. And grow the hell up while you're at it.

112. Here's why...
Because overweight people don't think that I'm a horrible person because I am not overweight. Mentally-challenged people don't think I am terrible for not being so.

If a person wants to be a vegan- fine, good for you. Live your life and be happy. But stop whining and crying when you see me eating a hamburger.

And as for "attacking organizations"- the only one I attack is PETA. I can't respect an organization that tells children "your parents are murderers".

I have never read such a statement from anyone associated with PETA. There are always a few stray loons in every organization - are you attributing one of their statements to the organization as a whole?

this has been covered. And yes, fat people choose to be fat - and they sue McDonald's and claim they didn't know that eating three Big Macs would make them gain weight.
