5. It's horrible . . .
They are acting like, er, wild animals. They deserved to be locked up in a zoo.

10. Nothing that wasn't up
for the past many millenia. People have got to get over this egotistical "Lord over nature" mindset, and start respecting the natural world-otherwise, it's just Darwinism at work.

The sick thing is, a few incidents like this and the Tiger attack on Roy turn the average city dweller into a "let's dominate the earth by killing it, because it's dangerous" freeper. Human stupidity ends up as bad PR for wildlife.

7. what the hell?
"Treadwell's films of close-up encounters with giant bears brought him a bounty of national media attention. The fearless former drug addict from Malibu, Calif. -- who routinely eased up close to bears to chant "I love you'' in a high-pitched, sing-song voice -- was the subject of a show on the Discovery Channel and a report on "Dateline NBC." ...

A self-proclaimed eco-warrior, he attracted something of a cult following too. Chuck Bartlebaugh of "Be Bear Aware,'' a national bear awareness campaign, called Treadwell one of the leaders of a group of people engaged in "a trend to promote getting close to bears to show they were not dangerous."

What the hell is wrong with these people! Wild animals ARE DANGEROUS for fuck's sake! Walking up to them and taunting them is not doing these animals any favors! I have had it with asshats keeping 400 lb. tigers in their apartments, taunting grizzly bears and otherwise harassing animals as a way of acting out their strange neuroses.

"Support your right to arm bears."

8. OK, this is it: the terrorist crists Dubya needed!
Those are obviously Al Qaida bears. Now that they're attacking Americans, we'll have to invade Canada. Better call off the 2004 Elections -- don't want the distraction of elections when we may be at war.

9. this "get close to bears" is nuts!!!
I am always on bear alert when I go camping and I take all the necessary precautions, including: "Where a bear is or likely to be,....I am not!!....They are wild animals and you cannot predict when something will spook them. As much as we know about them, we cannot understand how they will perceive a particular event....it's that "X" factor that's a killer.

12. agreed -- plus, it doesn't do the bear any favors ....
Must confuse the heck out of them -- some people want to be friends with them, other want to shoot them. There was a really sad case up in northern Canada a few years back, where wildlife photographers "habituated" a polar bear by offering food, etc., so they could get some nice close-up pictures. The bear then approached a group of hunters, hoping for handouts -- and was shot.

11. I will chime in and say...

I argue Bears are MOOOOOOORE un-predicatable than other predators like big cats.

In all honesty, if not rabid I would be less scared of a cat or wolf than a Bear.

The concept of "running toward" a Cougar or Wolf who is in your area actually WORKS...If you do that with a bear, he may just sit down and put a bib on.

15. just a warning
I know this only happens rarely, but bears do eat people. Sometimes, they just maul (or disfigure) them. Sometimes they just scare the hell out of you. My point is, bears are mortally dangerous and you should avoid them at all costs.
The two worst parts of this story is the fact that he conned some poor lady into camping in a Bear Buffet, and that the forest rangers and pilot's lives were endangered.
And secondly that there goes at least two liberal votes down the drain.
