Velvet R. / G'n'R drummer Matt Sorum: "Thank God 'Creed' is dead"
http://launch.yahoo.com/read/news/15704751

OK, let's see: The former Guns N' Roses bandmates have exchanged one loose cannon, Axl Rose , for another who seems even more volatile, Scott Weiland . And rock critics are placing bets on whether Weiland can get through a worldwide tour without winding up in either rehab, jail or a body bag. But after three Grammy nominations and one hit album, the supergroup known as Velvet Revolver is just getting started.

The band consists of heavyweights from two of the biggest — and most troubled — rock bands of the past 15 years: Former Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland and Guns N' Roses expatriates Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum. Rounding out the quintet is one of Slash's high school pals, Dave Kushner, who has ripped guitar riffs in bands like Wasted Youth, Electric Love Hogs and Suicidal Tendencies.

"I watch MTV and VH1 and I'm appalled," drummer Sorum said with a laugh. "I don't want to be a jaded rock guy, but I'm just like, what the ... 'Hoobastank' and 'Yellowcard'? Where do they get those names? Thank God 'Creed' is dead. What happened to Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath and Deep Purple and the Rolling Stones, those kind of bands?"

VR's debut album, "Contraband," has sold 1.6 million copies since it debuted atop the charts in June. The band is playing medium-sized arenas around the world through the winter and then coming back to the States for a three-month summer tour. Plans are in the works for a series of live albums from key performances late this year, and for a new studio album in 2006.

3. Uh... Matt? They're all in their 60s, OK? Also, they're not gone,
they're as near as your local Clear Channel "classic rock" station. (Just get used to the fact that each of those bands only produced two or three songs.)

4. That's not exactly what he meant.
He meant "that kind of band" not them specifically.

13. I was kidding around -- pluralizing uniques examples to make
a point has to be the dumbest thing going.

You might want to put me on ignore. Most of my posts are of a similar type.

15. "each of those bands only produced two or three songs"
Um...Wrongest. Post. Ever.

Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath and Deep Purple and the Rolling Stones only put our two or three songs each? Hell, Zep and the Stones all by themselves put out more excellent songs and albums than any three 00's-era bands you could name.

Yeesh.

16. Sheesh! The point, my dear Pitt, is that Classic Rock radio
Edited on Fri Feb-11-05 02:16 PM by mr_hat
only ever plays the same two or three selections from their assortment of "classic" bands, totally ignoring 98% of the discography.

How many times have you heard "Stairway to Heaven" vs "D'yer Maker", for instance?

edit: missing preposition

6. I met Matt Sorum a couple times when he played in The Cult
Hung out with him after a show in Tampa, on the Sonic Temple tour. Okay, okay...truth is we followed the band to Orlando after the show in my car, eeked through the gate behind the tour bus, and basically accosted him outside the lobby. He was VERY cool. Invited the three of us up to his hotel room to hang out. Gave us awesome seats and backstage passes to the show the next night.

Met him a second time at a drummer's demo a couple years later.

7. Contraband is a kick-ass cd
I bought it-I'm a GNR fan, too. As I said then, Axl writes better lyrics, but Scott has a better voice.

Slash and Duff are always worth listening to.
