I Hate People (A Thread by LeftPeopleFinishFirst)
Edited on Sun Oct-05-03 12:30 PM by youngred
Maggie can't start a thread for some reason, so here's what she has to say:

A recent surge of Lounge topics of a certain genre and last night's homecoming dance and my life in general have led me to believe that this is true.

Guys are idiots. They treat you like dirt. None of them that I have found generally care about you as a person. Just when you think you have found someone who might, they turn out to be a jerk or don't really care about you at all, want to be friends, they like another girl, or they are just not available... Girls suck too. They are catty, ditzy and follow mindlessly. The ones that have been your friends for a long time generally grow distant from you, because they are unsupportive and more into their own problems than yours. Hanging out with eachother seems like an obligation. Most of the girls that get dates are those who in the end will use guys and treat them like dirt in return.

People in general are self-absorbed. Not many truly care about their fellow people. If there was ever a time when being compassionate and sympathetic was in, it isn't now.

7. AHA
SEE SEE SEE.....what is there like a contract you need to sign to be a woman? "I, Maggie, promise to conform to the wishes of all other women who for no reason will always say a relationship with a friend 'won't work'."

I'm telling ya, until women get past this problem ...the world will get more and more shallow.

(That probably sounds a lot more harsh than I mean it to be)

4. I agree, sadly this is true to some extent
However I have also seen the reverse in action.

Here's what you need to do every day. You! Me! Us! Yes! If you see someone who might need help, offer it. If it's refused don't take it personally. If you are not sure a stranger may say "hello" or not, say hello anyway. It won't hurt you if that person is a jerk. Always give someone the benefit of the doubt when accusations start screaming.

And don't forget your liberal heritage.

13. I am real sorry about this all
As hard as you may find it to believe Maggie even after last night, I am still on a low level, lower than you no doubt. I know I may seem loud here but as I have said, I can be quiet. If you get me around people I know well, I bet I can be normal but around strangers and people I dont know well I am shy. Hope you feel better.

10. Thus the old adage: want a best friend? Get a DOG!
And I can attest-- the only truly form of unconditional love-- comes from our pets!

Having said that, I believe in evolution. Mankind surely NEEDS to evolve.

16. I am sorry, dearie...
But you know, this is because you are at a low ebb right now in your life. You HAVE known both guys and girls in your lifetime who were good and decent people who treated you with respect and compassion, and you will again. I promise. They're out there.

Watch "Bowling for Columbine"--I watched it yesterday for the first time, it was intense and sometimes depressing, but there are a lot of people in that film who genuinely care and MAKE A DIFFERENCE--and are good people.

Anyway, we are here for you sweetie, and I promise things will get better. Some of it is your age--I know that doesn't help right now--but some of the self-absorption and shallowness that you're seeing is just simple immaturity. It gets better--PEOPLE get better as you get older. Promise!

Cat

18. Oh Maggie I know how you feel.....been there many times....
....even with my own family girl...just be content with being able to see through it all and do your damnedest not to fall into the same mindset out of your frustration....because it's sometimes easy to do without even realizing it. You're bright beyond your year Maggie and are aware of so much more than the majority of your peers and hell the majority of adults for that matter...just believe in yourself and be the best you can be...don't worry about anyone else but YOU...because in reality you only have YOU to depend on after all is said and done...and the people who you'll find you can depend on are the only ones who should matter at all!!

Peace to you Maggie....hang in there...keep yo' chin up...yada yada yada!! :pals:

20. Hey LeftPeopleFinishFirst
I hate to hear you feeling so down about things, even if deep down I feel like much of what you said is true, at least generally speaking. What I believe is a vital thing to remember is that there are exceptions to every rule. Sometimes it may very well seem like the whole world and almost everyone around you is worthlessly self-absorbed but, as hard as it may be at times, try to keep in mind that there are also some truly good, caring people out there. It's good to try to focus on the exceptions to the rule.

I agree with you about compassion and sympathy not being in right now; I think we are living in some really slow times for a lot of the good things people like us look for out of life. I think one remedy is to try to surround yourself with good people... people who share your outlook- and try not to let the other jerks get you down!

I know I'm not the most optimistic person in the world so I'm sorry if I haven't helped much in cheering you up if you're in need of it. I feel like I know you a little from reading your posts and I think you're a very cool person, and I hate to hear you so down on yourself and life in general. My best advice is to just hang in there through all the tough times in your life. I know it sounds cliched, but the "down" times seem to come in cycles and things will inevitably get better.

21. Welcome to my world
I knew a girl who said how nice I was and that I would listen to her, was genuinely interested in hearing what she had to say and not telling her what I think all the time. You know what? She still picked another guy. She didn't want to "ruin what we had" whatever the hell that was.

It's not easy to care about other people in this world, but I have give points to those that try. It's not a gender related thing either, just six out of every ten people you meet, their sole purpose in life seems to be converting Oxygen to CO2 (that may sound meaner then I intended it to. 6/10 people you meet there will be little or no connection).

If you want my advice, go to the real world. And by "real world" I mean any forest, pond, creek, or other outdoor place where no other human being is around. Nature won't lie to you.

25. It Started With Regan
He generated the "Give-Me" mentality prevalent in the US.

I may not be older than dirt---yet---but I do remember what it was like to be your age. Confusion, raging hormones and a desire to do something about it.

You're smart enough to "pick-and-choose." Do it now and worry about meeting the right guy later.

If you're really worried about it, then I suggest you PM Raven, SoCalDem or anyone else you trust to ask their advice.

36. It started before Ronnie...
...actually, I think it began in the early-mid-'70s, with the popularity among many college students of the writings of Ayn Rand and her philosophy of "the virtue of selfishness," accounting altruism to be objectivly evil.

....with consume...consume...consume...keepin' up with the Joneses mentality...But actually it's always been a symptom...regardless of era...because it's in our animal natures to be selfish...only the strong survive and such...

No offense to the highschool boys at DU, but man, most of ya suck! :-)

37. Not ALL guys...
...but, in retrospect, I would say that most people in high school are rather idiotic. Actually, those in junior high are more unthinking and casually cruel -- by high school, a "critical mass" hve begun to grow up. Things really do change after you graduate -- the amount of maturity people gain by the time they're in college is quite striking.
