3. Dear God, why?
The eighties are over; hair metal is dead. You're FREE, man! You can stop now...

6. And what do we have now?
Sure, the 90's were a good decade. But the '00's? Please. If you think the 80's sucked, the current decade is far worse over all. I am not free. I live in the prison that is the '00's where just about everything is excrement. Virtually no redemption.

8. Better music, at least...
but, as to the rest of it, I get nostalgic for the Cold War and the days of Mutual Assured Destruction, I have to admit..a safer, saner world... (sadly enough)

13. I might have to disagree about the music thing.
Shitty teen pop acts like Jessica and Ashlee Simpson. Say what you will about the 80's, but people would not have stood for lipsyncing like they do now. I mean, yes Ashlee got booed at the Orange Bowl, but she still has a "carrer". Milli Vanilli was through the moment they were exposed. Everything feels more manufactured in Teen pop.

I am not too crazy about the current rap scene. As for Rock, there are a few good bands, but most of them sound like they are trying to copy the rap rock of RATM, and sucking big time at it. Or they are trying to sound like Nirvana, Soundgarden, or Pearl Jam and sucking at it. There does not seem to be very much energy in what they do to me. I personally think that for the most part, the music from 1998 until now has been shit for the most part. Except maybe System of A Down, RATM, Audioslave, Tool, A Perfect Circle and Sevendust.

17. Mainstream pop/rock sucks.
But then I don't listen to very much music that can be considered mainstream, anyway. I'm very heavily into electronica, among other things; that's CERTAINLY gotten a hell of a lot better since the days of Reagan and Bush I.

20. I never quite got electronica.
Actually some of it ain't half bad. But all that club techno and house music sucks. Maybe that is why.

21. Most of what I listen to is so-called "IDM"...
"Intelligent Dance Music"...meant to be listened to (preferably on a good set of high-end headphones), not danced to. Most of the club music is garbage for kids who are on too many drugs to care about anything other than the fact that it has a beat.

14. I don't think GNR were ever "true" hair metal.
Axl was kinda skanky, Slash wasn't exactly hot. The one blonde guitarist was a heroin addict, I think (not exactly sexy)...

So I guess I weigh in from a lady's perspective: GNR weren't nearly as pretty as, oh, let's say Sebastian from Skid Row (I'm just pulling a hair metal name out of the proverbial hat, but oh goodness did my sis LOVE him...'cuz he was "HOT").

So was GNR a hair metal band? I say "no." Discuss.

24. All right, then...
more of a punk-metal band that was semi-okay for a while (not as good as Living Colour, for my money, though) and then turned to shite as Axl's ego swelled to roughly the proportions of the Eurasian landmass...

10. Love & Rockets did a cover of BOC as well...
Though the group who issued the original record was...I'm thinking it was a Motown group...the Temptations? Anyone?

38. Correct, the Temptations.
Duran Duran also did a cover of BoC. on their "Thank You" album (filled with solid pop covers of great songs).

that's a great song, by the way. The Temptations version might be my favorite still though.

11. I shouldn't have asked LOL.
For the record, I love GNR. Forget all the naysayers. GNR were quite "full-bodied" at a time in my life when I needed it. Need I say more? :-)

19. GNR was the best band to come out of the 1980s
Edited on Fri Jan-21-05 12:08 AM by RagingInMiami
They should never be compared to all the other hair glamour bands like Poison, Ratt, Motley Crue, etc.
The problem was, Axel Rose has a lot of mental issues which prevented him from getting along with the other band members.

EDIT My favorite song on that album is probably Paradise City.

22. For the 80's I would say GNR and Classic Van Halen.
Though I don't know if the latter counts, because Van Halen's first two albums were in 1978 and 1979, but VH with David Lee Roth was excellent. THen Dave "Jumped" and it all went down hill.

26. I agree about VH going downhill after DLR
We can give VH the first half of the 80s, and GNR the second half, considering they exploded on the scene in 1986.

I still remember being blown away the first time I heard it. They really kicked some serious ass back in the day. On to my question.

Are you going to be buying Chinese Democracy?

27. Well, the real question is: Is it coming out? Ever?
Even if so, it is doubtful. Axl was probably one of the best frontmen in hard Rock, but he is such an idiot. I heard he wanted to Re-record AFD with his new version of GNR. He may own it, but it is sacrelige either way. In my opinion, Slash and Izzy Stradlin were the soul of that band, easily as much as Axl. Without them, the band does not exist. I haven't a lot of money, but I would be far more likely to pick up Velvet Revolver's "Contraband" before "Chinese Democracy".
