So you've made dinner, 16-year-old sez:

11. Back in my day...
...we had to sell ten lids of Mexican skankweed before we could even afford to eat as Subway. Then we had to walk two miles to get to the restaurant, through the snow and past rabid hippies. And all they had back then was dry tuna fish served without any mayonnaise or cheese.

You kids got it easy!

21. They'd make it out of broken glass and used hypodermic needles
and instead of putting it in bread, they'd smash our heads in with iron rolling pins. And we were thankful to have that much!!

Other kids had to smash their own heads in. We were lucky.

14. It depends: Did anyone ask the 16 year old what he/she wanted for dinner?
Edited on Sun Nov-28-04 03:53 PM by Radical Activist
Before it was cooked. Would you like someone dictating what you had to eat everyday?

19. No, I would not.
At 16, however, I could prepare the food which most pleased me. I could also buy it. Three year old little ones have their choices dictated. Sixteen year old people do not have their choices dictated. They are generally capable of buying and preparing their own, plus doing the clean up if they decline the meal being given to them. If they choose to whine and refuse what is prepared and offered, they might just a.) need a job. b.) learn to prepare meals which are more to their taste for the family. c.) get a clue.

25. They're fucking kids, and they'll eat what's on their plate
When someone cooks a meal for me, I don't insult them by begging off in favor of junk food. The little assholes need to learn some manners now, or pay the price later.

15. I'd probably say
"Nope, either eat what I made, fend for yourself or go hungry."

Now if THEY have the ten bucks (ten bucks?? to eat at Subway??) then that's a different matter. I try not to be too hung up on food.

But I wouldn't give it to them.

39. good point Miss M
my son is a very picky eater, and lately I have said, that is what we are having, I do not want to make more than one meal. But when they are older, maybe they could use their nascent culinary skills so that everyone can enjoy.

Teach the little shit some manners. You'll eat what's served, and at least pretend to like it.

I would not flip out, just calmly tell the kid, no, Ive made food. Thats it. No hystrionics. Just a simple no would suffice. I wouldnt allow my feelings to be hurt cuz I know how I tested my mom at that age. its just the age. no offense.

But geez people, kids have preferences too. Let the kid go with their own money, or let them making something, but don't be stuborn. By 16 they know what they like and don't.

I'm 15, so you'd think I'd be sympathetic, but really... Robb has gone through the effort of cooking, the least the son can do is eat it.

35. Is it friday or saturday night?
My general consensus with my parents at age 16 was that I'd go out with my friends most Fridays and Saturdays and eat dinner with them the other five days a week. I was fine with it, they were fine with it. Although if I didn't have anything to do on friday or saturday, I wouldn't ask for money to go get subway. My mom's cooking beats subway any day.

I would answer something along the lines of "That depends, do you have $10? And if you do, you'll have to walk - I'm eating dinner. And while you're at it, pick up some milk, Freddy's is just down the street. Oh, and how is homework coming tonight?"
