3. Me...too...
I've always bought presents for people based on a guilt trip (if they bought me something, or intend to buy me something, I feel the need to return the favor). No more. I clearly told everyone I know at the beginning of the year that I'm not participating in Christmas, and if they buy me something, that's their perogative.

As an agnostic, I don't know why I should be bullied into participating. Maybe I should start telling my Christian friends that they have to celebrate Ramadan with me.

13. It's hard to get mad when someone gives you a present
And I can't expect people who I am not close with, to understand how to respect my non-participation. I just don't feel comfortable telling people outside my immediate family, not to get me presents, when they may have had no intentions of getting me anything to begin with.
I'm telling you though, this shit is harder than quiting smoking.

9. I'm with ya. People get especially testy, shopping is a frantic rush to
find the only salesperson in the three level store, Mail brings yet more people I forgot to send cards to, crappy presents from friends, for whom I must now buy crappy presents. Insane pressure to have a "BIG FAMILY HOLIDAY", and my family and I don't speak. Oh, gotta get wrapping paper and ribbon, don't forget the god awful holiday parties where I always get backed into the corner by some woman who 1. wants me to hold the baby who I guarantee will vomit on my pretty holiday outfit, or 2. show me photos of the birth. I don't Like Kids, I'm not a gynecologist and I'm an atheist. But other than that I love X-mas.

11. ... we don't seem to be communicating on the same level...
I don't like the commercialism of the whole thing. Sure, I celebrate Hannukah, but it still disgusts me whenever I see a Hannukah catalog, or decorations, or whatnot. I'm with the Knights of Columbus: put the "Christ" back in "Christ-mass"

12. I love Christmas
Seriously, I do. I do all my shopping online, minimal of fuss, host friends and family and generally enjoy the time. I am sorry you don't like it. If you are ever in my neck of the woods at the holidays, give a holler. We will change your mind.

24. Just so you're not alone...
...I love Christmas too.

My family actually gets along. We enjoy spending time together (and I know that makes me very fortunate). I like Christmas music and cheesy Bing Crosby Christmas specials. I enjoy looking at the Christmas tree with the lights and the ornaments that date back to 1966 (my first Christmas). I have fond and happy memories of my childhood Christmases. I still get some of that old magic feeling I had as a child when I see Christmas through the eyes of my own children. I like getting a hot chocolate with marshmallows and driving through the neighborhoods looking at lights and decorations. I like getting a bottle of Port and watching "A Christmas Carol" with my husband late on Christmas Eve. I like Christmas cookies and leftover ham and lefse for breakfast.

Am I corny? Cheesy? Yeah, probably. But I don't care.

Commercialism bothers me, sure. We deliberately try to keep the "present" thing low-key to avoid setting up our children to become greedy gimme monsters. My own favorite memories of Christmas aren't the presents we got, but the things we did and the places we went and the people we celebrated with.

15. Me too !
Christmas is aimed at people with money and significant others to spend it on.

Those of us who are or have ever been broke and/or alone/estranged from friends/family feel especially left out.

It's a horrible popularity contest.

18. Not to preach
...but when I was young and single, I did a lot of volunteering over the holidays. It is hard not to get in the spirit when you are helping someone else. I did a lot of work at soup kitchens, Toys for Tots, etc.

21. Totally and completely with you
I don't consider myself a Christian. Thus, it has no religious significance for me. I'm not into the consumer aspect of it. My mother has 8 million hallmark ornaments. I own nothing Christmas related. I figure at some point I'll inherit all that crap. And promptly sell it on ebay. For me, Christmas is just another day off from work.

22. I hate the grinding, churning, frantic anticipation of the guilt
that hovers over everything for the "buying frenzy" that lasts for 6 weeks. It's torture. I also hate K-Mart Xmas tunes, and supermarket x-mas tunes. They depress the hell out of me.
