Naproxen - Ever take it?
I've been a lifelong Ibuprofin guy, but just switched to Naproxen. I feel like it's giving me a buzz. That's not possible, is it?

1. I never got a buzz from it at all
For me it just deadens pain after a couple days.

2. It is possible ...
... and be careful cause it can give you a wicked rebound headache, later on.

I had to completely stop taking it a few years back, now I can only handle Excedrin.

3. I don't think so.
Naproxen is the active ingredient in Aleve. It's a standard issue pain reliever/fever reducer like ibuprofen or the Tylenol drug.

You might be allergic?

8. Tylenol is the devil....
Really, a lot of doctors are moving away from acetaminophen because it has such a low threshold for liver damage.

It also isn't an anti-inflammatory like many of the other drugs so it's usefulness is somewhat specific.

10. Before Advil came out...
I would take Tylenol for mentrual cramps (this is when I was a teenager and got wicked cramps) and it did absolutely nothing. Advil (and Nuprin! Remember Nuprin?) was such a godsend. I would never take Tylenol because I think it's useless, but it's good to have that other info as well.

5. I took it breifly and had no problems.
Anything's possible, though. Can you call your pharmacist to ask about the the side-effects?

6. Yeah....I useually take 2 aleve to match prescription naprosyn.
You can also take it about every 6 hours instead of 12.

When I pulled a muscle a few weeks ago, I was in extreme pain and it was the only thing to work.

7. No buzz, but made me feel like I was burning up.
Make sure you take it on a full stomach, or you'll be in a world of hurt later in the day.

I feel shaky. I have felt shaky on it before too. I don't know what it is but the 500mg tabs don't make me feel "normal" Reactive arthritis which means they don't know what causes my ankles and for the first time this week my knees to swell beyond belief. FYI: It gets old so don't take expired stuff (good advice anyway) it loses it's oomph!

17. You're having the same reaction I did
Hands, feet, ankles, most joints and some soft tissue all swelled up. I threw the stuff away rather than risk finding out what it would do on the second dose.

30. Had the same experience with Ibuprofen.
Doctors told me never take it again -- I could go into anaphylactic shock the second time.

Tylenol/acetaminophen doesn't do anything for me.

I live on Bufferin.

11. I used it once, and it worked great.
(For muscle pain after we moved.)

But it has never worked for me again. I don't know why.

13. Naproxen side effects
I have a bottle of it right here on my desk. Drowsiness and dizziness are common, known side effects of Naproxen, so if that's what your buzz is like, it's entirely possible that the Naproxen is causing it.

Here's a good summary for Naproxen:

Hope you feel better :-)

25. side effects
I had serious side effects, a psychotic break, and massive bruising from taking it for two types of arthritis, but I was on strong dosage. Even so, be careful. :scared:

26. supplements
Thought I'd add I take natural anti-inflammatory supplements, and my inflammation dropped within three points of normal. Evening primrose oil, msm, flax seed oil, glucosamine chondrotin, and I have considerably less pain, sometimes no pain at all. I have fibromyalgia and polymyalgia rhuematica. I refused to go on steroids, and I more or less beat it.

16. naproxen-levels my pain
However I cant say I feel like I have a high. I feel so relieved that the pain is gone, its almost a floating sensation. I have just switched to Ibuprofen and really cant tell the difference, except that Ibuprofen is an anti-inflamitory as a pain reliever.

20. I've been taking it for over a year now
I've not noticed any "buzz" but I'm also on mophine, soma, lortab, etc.

I've been told by my doctor that I'll have to take it (Naproxen) for the rest of my life as an anti-inflammatory. I got hit by a school bus and busted out the side window with my head, herniating 4 discs in my neck.

23. Ummm...
Naproxen is an anti-inflammatory as well as a pain killer.

BTW, talk to your doctor the next time you see them to get a script, and buy them from the pharmacist -- much cheaper than buying them over the counter.

Also, if you take it more than 3-4 times a month you probably want to make sure to tell your doc (s/he may want to do blood work).
