7. Hmmm interesting point, how does that work?
If, for example. you're a zoomie working for NASA, does that make NASA a uniformed service?

12. NASA is NOT a uniformed service
It has members loaned from branches of the military, but there is no NASA uniform.

of "who pays them" -- just idle curiosity.

Since I have had the great pleasure to work in both of those fine institutions.

8. Thanks to those that served
And thanks for surviving to fight another day in another way.

I did not serve but my father was an Army D-Day survivor, two of my brothers were in the Marines (Nam), one in the Air Force (Nam period) and a sister in the Army. I also loss a neighbor in Viet Nam and an Uncle in WW II (Navy Chaplain). I had a total of six of my Uncles in WW II or Korea. My best friend is a Nam Vet.

9. 24 years Supporting and Defending the Constitution against
all enemies foreign and DOMESTIC as a member of the U. S. Navy.

Note to all fuckwad conservative republicans who despise the idea of constitutional liberties for all Americans; although I'm retired I'm still on duty. It must really suck to be a bonafide enemy of the Constitution but that's exactly what today's christian conservatives are.

20. No expiration on that oath.
That I know of.
"I________________, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic, and that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.

14. It's my birthday
Sir, yes sir, sir.
Armistice Day, 1944
March 21, '66 -- November 29, '69 Navy. 1,350 wasted days of standing in lines, swabbing decks, painting, scraping and repainting rusty metal. 2 physical deferments and drafted anyway so I ran down and signed up to keep out of that other quagmire. Know what the Lifers hate to hear? When asked "Why did you join he Navy?" tell them "Because the Army wouldn't take me." Hee hee...

I'm one of those lifers but I endured the wit and wisdom of my swabbies for 20+ years. Actually you joined the Navy because you knew the Chief was always right and your post swabbie world is better because of your exposure to Khaki.

THANKS AGAIN AND HAPPY VETERANS DAY MY FELLOW AMERICAN.

21. SEMPER FI and welcome to DU teammate!
It warms the cockles of my heart to see veterans posting at this site. I have little in common with most of the posters except we are all AMERICANS (mostly) who are SHIELDED by the constitution. I want it to stay that way; and I will do my damndest to ensure that it does.

25. Thanks for the welcome,
I found this site a few weeks ago, and it has been very interesting. Like you I have little in common with most posters, but we are all Americans, and some seem unable to grasp that among the ranks, there are many democrats. But we are there. I've found the enlisted ranks to be a cross section of America. The officer corps however, is a different thing altogether. But politics is not what motivates the military, that oath is. By the way, I am MGySgt, not Msgt as I typed earlier. Not that it matters to anybody but another Vet.

29. My uncle,
My dad's oldest brother was a 36 year Master Chief Fire Controlman, 1942-1978. I had so much respect for him growing up, in hindsight I know was scared of him. He only lived 8 years into a well earned retirement. My cousin, his oldest son, was a Nuclear Propulsion SCPO and submariner. I've always had utmost respect for USN Chiefs, and after I made E-7, I enjoyed fraternizing with the CPO's as much as with Marine SNCO's. I find at this level there is a tremendous mutual respect between us. Good to know you, Chief.

31. I should have said
That I feel no common cause with a very vocal minority of posters who have likened the American troops to Nazis and have compared our deeds to the worst of atrocities recorded in warfare. I've read posters who wish for American troops to die in battle, posters who liken the events of this past week to the rape of Nanking by the Japanese, and the the razing of Lidice by the SS. I had a canadian poster insinuate herself into a thread where I was answering a request for advice about what body armor to buy a deploying Major and subvert that thread into such a rant about the inherent evil of the American fighting man that the moderator had to lock it. This is just what comes readiliy to mind, there are other examples. I have not been around here for long, I hope there are really not many like that.

32. There really aren't.
As you can see from this thread and the others about vets floating around today, most DUers are either strongly supportive of our brave troops--or they are vets themselves. :) The owner of the website, Skinner, has addressed this in the Ask the Administrators forum. This is what he said:

But I will say that, in general, comments that suggest a lack of support for our troops are not appreciated. We need to remember who the real enemy is here. People who seek to demonize the troops play into the hands of our opponents. To be honest, my first impression whenever I see posts like that is that someone is trying to make us all look bad.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=120x24489

So you can see that the owners/administrators of this site and most of the posters are on your side and support you wholeheartedly! Welcome and I hope you meet like-minded people and enjoy your time here. :)
