I've said before, that the main reason for my interest in American politics is the fact that, if America goes down, Canada will likely go down with you. I was against Bush, not just for moral reasons, but because his re-election would spell doom for my country, as well.
I don't believe that anymore. The whole world knows what America has become. Watching the first three years of the Bush administration gave the progressive movement in Canada the impetus it needed to acheive unprecedented power in our Parliament, and now I have every confidence in them. We won't fall for any more of Bush's bullcrap, and neither will any of the other countries.
I'm sure you don't want to hear this, but I'm going to say it anyway. The United States of America did not suddenly go bad when George W. Bush came to power. Your country was an arrogant, self-righteous bully long before then; Bush is merely the clearest expression of everything that's wrong with it. I know that many Americans, especially the ones on DU, are wonderful people. But most of the Romans were wonderful people, too. If America collapses in on itself, most of us foreigners will sigh, do our best to mitigate the damage and help the survivors, and quietly mutter "good riddance" under our breath when we think you're not listening. Then we'll wait for the next superpower to arise, knowing that, like America, it'll be just a little bit better than all the ones before it, and that eventually humanity will get it right, even if those of us alive now will never see it.
I'm going now, and I doubt I'll be back anytime soon. I am truly sorry, but for the sake of my life and sanity, I have to leave your nation to itself and look to my own. I don't know if America will (or should) survive the next four years, but whether it does or not, the ideas and ideals it was founded on will endure: the dream of a world where everyone is free to live as they wish, and those who wield power are held accountable to the people's trust. No matter what happens, that dream will always be a part of America's legacy, and no amount of tyranny and warmongering can overshadow or erase it.
