police harassment of the beat bush mobile
driving the beat bush mobile in downtown chicago. driving around in the art gallery district, and a cop pulls over to let me pass him, then follows me. 2 blocks later, he pulls me over. tells me my brake lights are out. asks me if i have insurance. i pull out the most recent id card that i have, which is, of course, 6 mos. old. so i get a ticket for driving an unsafe vehicle, driving an uninsured vehicle, and a ticket for my son not using his seatbelt. he did have it on, but he had the shoulder strap behind his head.
turns out only one brake light was out. people, in chicago, you do not get a ticket for a single brake light out.

nope, don't work like that here.
this is the big city. they do not play that here. and coppers here are choosy about the kind of things they crack you for.
they were doing their very most "night stick up the butt stiff" attitude.

9. chicago cops
Edited on Tue Oct-26-04 09:40 AM by mopinko
are a breed apart. there is a certain amount of that stuff, but have been there and done that, too. that is a half-hearted, ya-ya, just doing my job kinda thing.
this was the full show of power, attitude a foot thick.
and deliberate. they pulled aside so that they could follow me and hope i would do something. and i tell you, you would never, never get pulled over for ONE brake light out. there is only one reason for that, and that is to have a reason.

5. couldn't tell by the profile.
clunkers need a lot of love, but German clunkers need less.

what year is she?

all you need are two tasteful matching pairs of hub caps and she will once again be the envy of the neighborhood

NB I agree with the first guy that the cop was on your case because it's the end of the month

6. she's a 78
she has sucked up an amazing amount of tlc. i loved her even before she became the beat bush mobile. my mechanic refuses to put any more real work into her. he thinks i am crazy. but she is a very special car.

7. what's better than an old, stouthearted benz?
a full stomach, perhaps. my dad used to own this '79 240D that was totalled in an accident about half a decade ago. old benzes are SO structurally sound and it's nothing short of miraculous that my dad could actually walk away from that wreck. and in retrospect it occurs to me that she never gave us any real trouble--perhaps freyon would start spraying out of the AC or you'd have a defective compressor, or the heating coil wouldnt work one morning. standard wear and tear, by all accounts, and this was after roughly two decades, which is an eternity for an automobile.

the point is, she drove SO WELL and looked beautiful at the same time.

so, kudos on your 'clunker'
