Computer CD problems....anyone know anything about this one?
Every time I try to write any info to a CD my computer just shuts down. First it started when I was using Nero only, but now it's doing it with all my cd writing software. It will just be writing or converting along and then...click...the whole system shuts off dead.

1. sounds like a power supply problem
but does it completely shut off, requiring you to turn it back on? or does it just reboot itself?

3. Just a click and then to black
no warning screen and no reboot.

5. Still could be a power supply problem
Is you PS powerful enough for your system components? Did this start after you installed another hard drive or some lights or something? Have you ever been able to burn a cd?

8. I used to burn cds all the time
But I'm seriously starting to think you might be onto something with the power supply suggestion.

About a month or so ago--around the time I first started having troubles burning cds--I noticed that my computer was noticibly louder.

Good new is that I have a back-up computer that's of the same level as the one I'm having trouble with now. I'll just have to figure out how to get it on the net and get a cord long enough to reach it and then I'll be cool.

2. question
The ONLY time it shuts down is when you are using the CD?

4. Yep
But I just installed a new cd/dvd burner last night and it's doing it with that drive too.

6. first
Check the logs
Assuming XP
Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer
Look under System and Application for clues.

Since it is only shutting down when using the CD, I would agree that it is a powersupply issue. If was happening at random times, I would think it may have been the processor fan going out, causing the processor to overheat and shut down.

9. Kac-hing!
Earlier questions about the power supply gel now.

What is the rating on your current power supply and how many drives are you operating in your box?

10. I don't know....
I've never had a computer that was even close to being overworked before, so I've never had to check and don't know how to do that.

But remember, at the time the outages started happening for the first time I hadn't added the new drive--it was still in it's store-bought form.

13. There should be an adhesive tag on the PS
Check that and email me what it says with a description of what you have in the box including processor and drives.

We can get this thing fixed pretty easily, I'm sure.

7. this is a long shot...
but I know certain versions of Nero conflict with Norton Antivirus and cause some really weird sh*t. If you are running Norton hit the Nero site and see if they have any patches, or better yet find a copy of Roxio EZ Cd Creator.

11. I've also wondered about Norton
But it still shuts down with Norton deactivated. Additionally, I've patched Nero up-to-date.

I think I just got a copy of that with my new drive.

Does it make VCDs?
