Can Barry Bonds pass Hank Aaron?
I keep telling myself no, he's too old, at his age it's only a matter of time before he'll peter out before he can reach 755 home runs (Aaron), but Bonds just keeps plugging away at the age of 39. He now stands at 642 home runs, only 18 shy of Willie Mays. Babe Ruth is next at 714. What is your opinion? Can Bonds break the record? Or is he too old?

A qucik look at his stats for this season and his career is linked below.

1. He will if he wants to
He is a young 39, still punishing fastball pitchers better than any 39 year old hitter ever has. He's going to pass his godfather Mays this season and is likely to pass Ruth two seasons from now. If he plays another four full seasons, it is almost a certainty. Is he good enough to play that long? Without vices like drinking or smoking and in good physical condition, it is within the realm of possibility, but it will be difficult. Lousy expansion pitching needs to stay, but that is almost certain.

2. As long as he stays healthy he can
He's had some hamstring problems so he misses time and he sits on day games after night. So he's at 30 HRs now and getting hot so 60 isn't unreasonable this year. That would leave him 83 short and he's still hitting them 450 feet+ so if he can play 75% of the games the next two years he's there. What I'm amazed at is that he's still hitting MONSTER shots with regularity.

3. It's a possibility

He can't break Ruth's record this year. He could touch it next year, but I think Aaron's record is nearly out of the question. But who am I to say?

4. Modern parks and pitching
make this much easier than us old farts think. SBC Park was built just for Barry to hit home runs in. And he still brings it around fast enough make it look easy. I can remember Mays and McCovey clearing the wall back to back at Candlestick when I was a kid, but it didn't look easy, it looked amazing. SBC looks easy.

5. Bonds has the talent
But he doesn't have nearly the attitude to match his tremendous talent.
I have no doubt he'll pass Aaron in the next few years, but I don't think he's really a good teammate. I'm old fashioned, I root for the good guys, the ones with both talent and a good spirit. Bonds is too much of a "me me me" player for my liking, personally.
But he is sure one of the greatest to ever play the game, and he is hands down the greatest living player as of now.

8. Griffey has a big mouth
...ever since he dissed Seattle and went to Cincinatti, he hasn't had an injury-free season.
Another player I can't stand. He should've stayed in Seattle.
It must drive him nuts to see Seattle being one of the best teams in baseball now.
