Not anyway involved in the plot. Just about 3/4 of the way through the movie they need a quick shot of a Carpenteresque UFO flying over the house. Just to make the audience think "what the fuck."

See, for instance, "Silent Hill."

If you're having trouble following me you're not smoking enough weed.

Because I'm not even trying.

If you want more, all you have to do is ask.

It was excellent and very thought - provoking.

the best cheesy saucers are in "Ed Wood" and Plan 9 ( by Ed Wood), though. ;)

Oh and have you seen The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra? Great send-up of cheesy alien flicks.

5. Yeah, but those are Sci-Fi movies
(which incidently, don't have enough ghosts, but that's another thread)

We're talking haunted house movies, a sub-genre of horror movies.

14. misdirection
The audience member would ask just that question, "but why would a serious haunted house movie have UFOs?"

Like I said, it would need to be about 3/4 of the way through, the point at which most movies have some kind of psychedelic freakout to a greater or lesser degree.

It's kind of like, "why would a movie about a magical candy factory show a chicken with its head getting chopped off?"
