Latest CD purchases and listening to
I have three new CD's and another CD Ive been listening a lot to.
I got American Idiot by Green Day, both Rock Against Bush's, and Ive also been listening to Singers and Songwriters, a free CD that came with a British magazine my dad bought which has stuff like Joe Strummer doing in his own unique way singing Redemption Song, a Canadian Choir doing the Beach Boys' You're so Good to me, or Gram Parsons' version of Wild Horses. So it's been a mix for me, some punk, some classic sounding rock, and some altern country.

2. hey John!
If you dig "alt-country" check out, if haven't yet, Lucinda Williams, Shelby Lynne and Kasey Chambers. Kasey has a brand new album out that I haven't heard yet, but her earlier stuff, I think, is very good.

3. Lucinda Williams?
I believe my dad is a fan. I actually like it, and there was a time where I swore I didn't like any country music, then I realized, it's the Toby Keiths, Garth Brooks, etc of the business that suck, I really can't believe that "Wild Horses" is originally a Stones song, my dad told me that Parsons was a friend of Jagger and Richards, and ironically enough while we were in lab today, my teacher put on music and it was the stones version, I really am digging all this new music now though, still listening to my old stuff.

6. yeah Lucinda is great
But I do have a thing for female singer/songwriters. I love Aimee Mann too, and she's certainly not "country." What's her name, Ani Difranco, I sort of like her, though she can be pretentious sometimes.

8. I believe my dad has this Brian Wilson DVD
Edited on Wed Sep-29-04 12:47 AM by JohnKleeb
with Aimee Mann and Sean Penn's brother singing a Wilson song. Some of my music choice is from my dad's infleunce but my recent listening to like the rock against Bush stuff has been by friends. So I guess music is influenced by what you're around, another reason why Freud was full of crap, heh I went from music to psychology, I am such a nerd.

18. You got it.
Just reading that Maria McKee was named best female vocalist in Rolling Stone in 1985 for this album.

Got to see her live, solo, when she was touring for Life is Sweet, about 1996. I prefer the LJ stuff, but that voice was great.

22. she was quite a beauty too
If I recall correctly, last time I saw her, she had gotten way overweight. I hope she's slimmed down, or that my memory is playing tricks on me.

4. alt country, eh?
Edited on Wed Sep-29-04 12:43 AM by mahayasmellbad
You should check out the Silver Jews. Namely, "Natural Bridge" and "American Water" and "Bright Flight." The lyrics are FAIRLY brilliant and QUIRKY and at times even SENTIMENTAL, and the songwriting is pretty straightforward too.

Edit: I could post some lyrics if you'd like.

27. Everyone should check out
Caetano Veloso.

He's the Bob Dylan of Brazil. He invented their genre, Tropicalia. He did a cameo in "Habla Con Ella". Portuguese is so beautiful.
