This is mostly for younger people like myself but all can come in of course. Magisterate the guy who is sick and I wish him the best one time pmed and refered to me as Sir to be honest it felt kinda odd being 15 and being called sir. It was not bad or good. Then at work this week I got called sir again it feels odd. Just a rant.

2. Oh gawd yes....
I can't stand it... I just don't feel like I should be called sir. I don't feel all _that_ old Hell I am only 30.

In undergraduate and graduate school when I TAed labs I ask my students to call me Scott, I just didn't like to be called mister Myers.

3. Mag. is sick? (Sorry to go off topic)
On topic: Sir/Maam is somewhat anachronistic at this point, so yes

kind of weird.

What is up with Mag?

7. for me
my calling you sir is a sign of respect. I say thank you Sir if you are a cashier a bagger or you've waited on me it matters not what your age is. I think people that provide customer service get little respect in this country so I'm not going to do anything to make it hard on those folks. Thank you Sir or Ma'am is my way of doing that.

Of course I am from 'the south' ;-) bwa haa! haa!

I dunno why anyone would. My point exactly. And, I wouldn't call anyone sir...ever. Unless I was enslaved into 15 hours of daily back-breaking labor...then maybe. But, I really don't envision that happening...

25. Always did make me feel weird, and probably always will
Of course, being called 'ma'am' would be even more weird.....

I still remember when a lady told her little kid something in reference to me as "the man." I was somewhere in my late teens or around 20 and it freaked me out - at that point I'd never thought of myself as anything but a boy. That still applies, really.

I don't ever call anyone 'ma'am' or 'sir.'

32. Yes
After I was called "ma'am" the first few times, I realized that I was not seeing myself as others do. Aging gracefully is extraordinarily difficult, IMO.

33. I'm Southern-born too, John. Just like some of the other people
who have posted on this thread. With us it's a way of life. I'm teaching my grandson to say 'sir' and 'ma'am', but I'm not getting, you know, weird about it. It's simple courtesy.

However, one does not necessarily have to say those words to be thought polite. Politeness is in demeanor, just as much as in what you say. Someone could say 'sir' to me, and behave very rudely, as well, and the 'sir' won't make up for it. It's all in how you behave.

38. Another southern-born person checking in
It's just the way I was taught. It's become habit with me, like saying "'scuse me" when I let out with a deeply-satisfying, rumbling, soul-fulfilling belch from the diaphragm. I admit it sometimes freaks out people half my age, and I've never gotten used to being called "sir" myself -- although I admit being called "sir" is probably preferable to some things I've been called...

40. It's different for men and women in its connotation of age.
Girls and younger women are called 'miss' and older women are called 'ma'am.' For men, it's 'sir' no matter what the age.

I freaked out at being called ma'am in my thirties, and I still feel uncomfortable when I'm called ma'am in my forties. And I even got it in another country: when I was in Montreal (in my thirties), the chambermaid called me madame. Of course, I never liked 'miss' much either. Although, when a store clerk recently called me 'miss,' I felt good about it. :-)
