Yoko Ono to repeat naked appeal for world peace
Yoko Ono to repeat naked appeal for world peace

06 September 2003

For the first time in nearly 40 years, Yoko Ono is to perform one of her art "happenings" in which she invites her audience to cut off her clothing until she is naked on stage.

Ono, the widow of John Lennon, first performed the conceptual work Cut Piece as a peace protest in Japan in 1964.

At the age of 70, she is to repeat the protest in Paris later this month because of growing political tension in the world.

6. Based on the success of the first time
she did this, she should consider putting on a second layer of cloths and call it an "art happening."

My personal feelings are that people will be rushing to put more clothes ON her, not take them off....

12. John Lennon catches 5 bullets and not ONE gets Yoko Ono....
Where's the justice in that?

Before the Spanish Inquisition arrives, I should point out that it's a quote from a standup comedian......if only I could remember whether it was Bill Hicks, Dennis Leary or someone else.....

13. Presumably her tactic is to scare the leaders of the world
Into playing nice together so as to avoid the sight of her nekkid. And I daresay it will work. She'll win the Nobel Prize for Peace. Ono will become a daring symbol of nekkid defiance in the face of overwhelming odds. Her stark posterior will be a rallying cry for all who hunger for peace and justice! Peace and Yoko's ass!!!

everybody is so funny! WE DON'T WANNA SEE OLD TITS!! AIN'T WE COOL?

This is pathetic....

Did you ever think that maybe she's NOT doing this in order to sexually interest you?

Did you ever notice what a quiet, dignified woman she is? How she has never fought back against decades of vicious attacks? How she has never given up her work for the peace movement?

I mean seriously, how cool is it to make jokes about a 70 year old woman's appearance? It's childish. Grow the fuck up and realize that Yoko Ono is an artist - a weird one, yes - but there's NO reason to belittle her over this. I think it actually sounds very powerful.

And yes, I like Yoko. Sue me.

18. Last time I looked, this was still the Lounge
AKA the one place on DU one can feel free to be a smartass. The last refuge from the PC police. Do we really mean everything we say? No. Do I sound like Donald Rumsfeld? Yes. Why? I don't know.

20. oh, I know,
hardhead. But this was chewed over in GD for the last two days, and I was really shocked at

a) the vehemence with with Yoko was insulted and attacked and
b) the lack of support she got from a lot of people I would've expected to defend her

But after 35 years, isn't it just a little too easy to repeat the same old jokes about her appearance? I think there's a lot about her to admire, too.
