Can anyone in here read seismographs?
http://www.fnet.bosai.go.jp/cgi-bin/prev.pl?plot-type=1day&station=KIS&comp=LHZ&time=2004091000

I ask as this is seismograph activity from the day of the North Korean explosion, and I've read reports that this graph shows earthquake activity throughout the time of the explosion.

Any verification?

4. Please explain how you arrived at the conclusion...
Are you a seismologist? Can you explain in layman's terms?

I'm not attacking you(so I apologize if those question sound aggressive), I really want to know....

7. In a nutshell
Nearly instant ramp-up to max intensity, smooth curve of decline to "normal" seismic levels. An earthquake has ups and downs in intensity, as areas of the fault "break free" and move. . .

8. Ok...another question (hah hah i haven't crashed yet)

That chart was actually for the 10th, how about this one for the 8th?

http://www.fnet.bosai.go.jp/cgi-bin/prev.pl?plot-type=1day&station=KIS&comp=LHZ&time=2004090800

does this clear anything up?

PS, you can click last and next down at the bottom of the graphs to jump forward or backward in time....

Thanks for your help...that was pretty understandable. :)

9. That one. . .
. . . .looks like multiple events: the fall-off is NOT smoothly curved. . . unless the initial event was of sufficient strength to set off separate tectonic events. . .

12. So then....
that second plot there looks more like an earthquake?

Ok, thanks :) That was very helpful.

14. It does. . .
. . .but the extensively compressed nature of the image would need to be significantly expanded to confirm that.

But the initial view is more typical of an earthquake or other seismic event rather than that of an explosive point-event. . .

13. Here's a very interesting photo or two of a forest fire

This happened in San Bernadino last year. Apparantly the mushroom shaped cloud was approx 5 miles in width.

5. That looks. . .
. . .Like a single point-event, but a longer trace is needed to see if aftershocks, etc existed.

Mind you, I haven't really read seismograms since 1983. . . .

15. Interesting, I e-mailed geological survey canada last night, the reply
The data you are seeing on the Japanese station represents ground shaking at
that site/station for times in UT (Universal Time) =~ GMT (Greenwich Mean Time)
aka Zulu time.

The scale at the top is in seconds, so 1800s = 30 min.
So at around 02:06 you can see this station recorded a very strong motion. This
was probably from the following earthquake:
M5.6 Friday, September 10, 2004 at 02:05:57 (UTC)
NEAR S. COAST OF WESTERN HONSHU, JAPAN
(see http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/bulletin/ )

So they seem to be saying that it's an earthquake.

6. A clarification....and a kick.
I need the answers in layman's terms. I thought that was obvious...but then this is the internet...:)

so one more kick before I crash out.
