My favorite neighbors (left-wing) from Dallas just called. Good news.
We had a great conversation for over an hour, with the three of them (mom, dad, and 16-year old son) on the speaker phone. The son is a great kid. He writes political stuff for his school (Cistercian) newspaper. He might just be the next Lars-Erik Nelson.

Here is what was extremely interesting. They reported a plethora of political signs for Martin Frost (D-24th Congressional District) in toney Highland Park. Frost was victimized by Delay's re-districting and, apparently, even the super-rich of H-P are pissed. He is running against right-winger Pete Sessions. My friends said that Frost has so many signs in H-P that Session's goons are going out at night and removing some of them. I sent Frost a donation a couple of months back.

My liberal friends also reported that much of the Dallas Republican community is incensed over the Swiftboat-Liars in general, and Texan John O'Neill in particular. O'Neill's Nixonian roots have not gone un-noticed by some party members who would rather forget Nixon and his nefarious Texas connections (Poppy, Mosbacher, Baker, et. al.).

1. Good, good, good.
Here in Kansas, supposedly a solidly Republican state, I can tell you that I am seeing more bumper stickers and yard signs for Kerry/Edwards than for Bush/Cheney. I only hope it's a sign of how the voting will go in November.

3. Any other observations from Highland Park? Here's one of mine.
I saw Romano (Macaroni Grill) waxing on about Bu$h the other day. The Romano's lived directly across the street (Euclid) from Dick Cheney and his charming wife, Lynn-the-scorpion-eater. The Romano's had a topiary GOP elephant in the front yard that they decorated for Christmas. Dick Cheney had dog shit in his front yard where I trained my dog, Sirius, to poop in his ivy.

I think the Romano's fell on hard times with the Bu$h economy (but he doesn't realize why bidnis is bad). They put their rather attractive contemporary on the market for $6 million. Right before I left Dallas in late April, I walked the dogs over to the former Chez Cheney for a little nostalgic defecation and LOW-AND-BEHOLD!, the Romano house was GONE. Leveled. Empty lot. I guess they sold it. Probably took a bath.

4. DemoTex doesn't lie
I'm here in Dallas and everything you wrote, I just nodded my head. They thought originally this was going to be a HUGE uphill battle for Martin Frost and it was hard at first, but it's looking like he's got serious momentum and I say GOOD on him. You're right, he was SCREWED by DeLay's redistricting bullshit and guess what? So were the good people of Arlington, Texas, who lost him.

I'll never forget the letter to the editor I read in the Dallas Morning News several months back when the whole redistricting mess was going on from a Republican in Arlington who LAMENTED losing Frost. He said even Republicans voted for him in Arlington because he did such a good job representing his district and they were ALL going to miss him. Amen.

I've seen all the Frost signs, it is amazing. And Sessions just ASSumed he'd win this easily and now he's in the fight of his political life. GOOD.

And you are also right about the swift boat thing. I was JUST talking to some bush supporter neighbors tonight and when one of them said "you know what I think of those swift boat guys? VOMIT" the rest of them nodded their heads and totally agreed. They all said things along the lines of "you don't tear down another veteran."

So I can personally attest to everything you are saying Demo.

6. Have you heard the tacky Sessions radio ads about immigrants?
They are being blasted all over AM radio. Some Texan sounding man talks about Frost supporting laws that will let "illegals" take jobs away from 'mericans, etc.

I can't stand that man. The vision of him pulling up yard signs and getting pulled over by cops cracks me up. I laughed out loud when I read about it in the paper. But the Sessions campaigned defended the action b/c he was enforcing some type of "zoning law." I guess its a citizen's arrest of some sort.

5. PLANO TEXAN HERE - KERRY SIGNS ON MY BLOCK FOR THE FIRST TIME!
Edited on Sat Aug-28-04 09:30 PM by powergirl
I've lived her for about 15 years and always, in the past, I'm the only one with a Dem sign surrounded by a sea of Bush signs. Now, there are 2 Kerry signs and only 2 Bush signs. That is a great change from the usual ONE dem sign (mine) and 20 Repub signs. It looks like even Bush supporters are not really motivated to trot out a sign.
