Can people PLEASE limit the number of threads they start
Edited on Sun Aug-15-04 08:59 AM by burythehatchet
Its getting ridiculous. Sometimes you look in a forum (other than the Lounge) and one person has started 10 threads.

Why is this a problem? Because every time a new thread is started it necessarily pushes another thread off the page.

Why is this a problem? Because there are some among you who put a lot of time and thought composing an original thought. Its not fair that their effort should disappear off the forum because 3 people start 20 threads in 10 minutes. And these posts are something like "John Doe said something on this show". No thought, no topic, just a one line statement.

I am not into censorship. But I feel like I am missing a lot of good, interesting thoughts that our fellow members are composing.

PLEASE DO NOT MOVE THIS TO ASK THE ADMINS. unless you want it to die a quick painless death.

1. That's only if you're looking at the "Latest" page
If you go to a forum, the last "kicked" thread is always at the top. I think limiting people is a horrible idea though.

2. I've changed my preferences
...so that Lounge threads don't appear on the "Latest..." screen. Makes a difference. If I understand you correctly, you'd like to have a "separate the serious from the frivolous" filter for the Lounge?

3. well in fact I don't have the same concern about the lounge
Edited on Sun Aug-15-04 08:56 AM by burythehatchet
its the other forums that I think are hurt by "mass" postings.

I just thought I would bring it up in the lounge as a way to keep it from getting locked.

6. Ah, understood.
What gets me is people posting duplicate threads about something in the news without checking to see if it's been posted before.

8. oh yeah, something like "breaking news" that happened last week.
But my concern is that I know there are threads started by people who have a genuine and original thought and they want to discuss it. They get bumped off and it may not be totally fair.

5. the latest page was just an example
obviously if the threads are being posted in GD, for example, the same problems arises. I don't care about it happening in the lounge because, for the most part, people aren't compsing serious subjects for debate here.

9. you're right matcom
I feared it would get locked in another forum. Its definitely not a problem in the lounge.

10. Shouldn't you start another thread to keep this
kicked? It's about to fade into cyber oblivion to those mortals that click on latest.

12. Simply click on the ignore button for the threads you could care less for
then the ones you want will pop back onto page 1.

Or contribute an answer, this will bring it back up to first page.

Everyone once in a while puts in a few too many posts. When I see I've more than 3 on page 1 with my name on it these days, I 'cool off' for a while. (I'm not perfect but I try...)

13. I might suggest hitting "ignore", one of the finest tools here at DU...
I too have seen many fine thoughts swept away into oblivion, some of them mine!...:)

People have the right to post, and I agree, that a quick search often shows that the subject has been brought up before. Unless it is "spamming", there are no specific rules that are violated.

Once again, I might suggest "ignore"....:)

14. Simply locking those pathetic
Won't-somebody-please-help-me-with-this-freeper-email-because-I'm-too-fucking-lazy-to-do-anything-myself threads from the get-go would be a good start.
