Help! I'm addicted to kitchen gadgets!!
I thought I had it under control. At first it was "I REALLY need that," then it was, "I can stop whenever I want." Now I have to face the fact that I have a problem. I have a typical amount of counter space in my kitchen but an UNGODLY amount of cabinets with lots and lots of room for all kinds of junk. This only makes the problem worse. In THE LAST 2 MONTHS here is what I've bought:

Hamilton Beach HealthSmart 31605A Indoor Grill
Completely submersible, cleanup is a breeze. Does thin things really, really well. Thin cuts of fish are the juciest and tastiest I've ever had, with those nice delicious grill stripes on both sides. I haven't quite managed to do thicker cuts yet very well yet. Large boneless chicken breasts turn out a little dry, it's hard to judge when the inside is done. I may have to set it to a little lower heat or cover it while grilling, or maybe it just doesn't do thick cuts well. Need more practice to tell for sure.

Presto Pizzazz Rotating Pizza Oven
A strange looking device but I do love homemade pizza and can never seem to get the crust right in the oven. I really like this little guy. It's very, very light, small, quiet and does pizza--homemade, frozen, unbaked take-out--to absolute perfection. With independent lower and upper heating elements, you can fine tune the timing to make the crispiest crust or bake the top a little longer for extra thick toppings. Frozen, store-bought pizzas come out perfect every time. Only does up to 12" pizzas, may be a problem for families, but for a single persom I recommend it highly.

HealthSmart Juice Extractor
I don't even like juice. Carrot juice makes me gag, but the pulp is very useful in recipes. Still, the recipe book has some tasty looking fruit juices you can make, various cranberry blends, etc. I was going to take my father's juicer which he no longer uses but it's like 40 lbs and nearly the size of a suitcase. At least this one is quite small. The filter/blade doohicky is extremely delicate and not covered by warranty. I haven't had a chance to use it yet.

George Foreman GV5 Contact Cooker
I saw this one on TV. They said order in the next 10 minutes and they'd take 20 dollars off! So I did. I NEVER thought I'd fall for that, or buy a "George Foreman" anything, but I have to admit I'm loving it (turns out you can buy it for the same "20 dollars off" price online anyplace, of course). Instead of grilling my thick cut of salmon I popped it in this baby instead. It turned out perfect. Moist and juicy inside and out. Not as tasty as if it were grilled, but like I said, I haven't figured out how to grill thick cuts on my griller. The timer makes it easy, no need to worry about temperature or preheating or heating the entire oven to bake something small. It's very small which makes it easy to store on the counter out of the way, but limits you to really small chickens and other cuts of meat. There is a larger version for sale but this size is perfect for me. I do have a regular oven after all. So far this is my favorite purchase. For some reason it's really easy to burn yourself on it, even though the manual warns about this repeatedly. You have to be careful near the thing.

I also bought a very small food processor for something like 15 bucks. Good for chopping a clove or two of garlic. I have my eye on one of those nifty super-processors they're currently selling on TV, complete with goofy chef, fawning female assistant, and easily pleased ohh-ing and ahh-ing audience. He just makes everything look so easy and delicious. Plus I saw an ice shaving machine in a store window I want (I LOVE shaved ice), and there's another thread this morning about fancy kitchen knives and I REALLY need a new set of knives. AND i need a new coffee ginder to top it all off.

When will it stop? Is there a support group for people like me?

1. You are not alone......
when I'm stressed or bored, I buy things for my kitchen. Albeit, smaller items, but kitchen do-hickeys nonetheless....

:grouphug: You are not alone.....

I want that Kitchen Bullet thing, to make smooties and other stuff. :)

Didn't go anywher, just stuck around home relaxing and taking care of things. There was some boredom involved, which really contributed to my problem.

3. Have your tried the "Hot Diggety Dogger"?
It's works like a toaster and it has one slot for the weiners and another one for the buns? Toasted Kosher dogs with lots of garlic in them are great.

I love kitchen gadgets!

You can only toast the buns but you have to try this gadget if you like hot dogs.

I forgot to tell you this the hot dogs and buns pop up like toast when they are done.

But it looks SO cool! I can do hot dogs perfectly well on my grill, buns too. Plus they're all stripey, but I want the Hot Diggity Dogger so bad. Even the name is cool. I absolutely LOVE hot dogs although I rarely eat them (too much sodium).

Maybe I'll buy one for my sister.

17. You can make sausages in it
If the sausages are too fat they get stuck but they come out delicious like you grilled them. For a person that lives in the city and can't grill out is comes in handy.

Thanks for the picture!

26. I want one of those timer automatic breakfst thingies...
You know, they have your fried egg, toast, and coffee/tea made fresh and hot when you get up in the morning? I don't think they're available anymore.

I just discovered the joys of a breadmaker we've had for years and never once used. I've baked a loaf a day for a week!

22. Two electric ovens...
several electric griddles, pans and woks, a breadmaker, microwave, crockpots, two electric coffeepots, a fryer, yogurt maker, espresso machine, rotisserie chicken roaster...

No egg poacher, though.

I could use the stove just to boil water for the coffee press, since I have avoided getting an electric kettle.

32. Yogurt maker
Now my yogurt maker has to be the best gadget I ever got. I bought it years and years ago. It's a french or french canadian model, I don't think they make them anymore. At the time salton was the other popular yogurt maker but I had heard they were unreliable and constantly breaking. Anyway, I must have made thousands of gallons of yogurt over the years in that thing. And the tastiest, smoothest, creamiest yogurt I've ever tasted. I still use it.

I want to buy another ice cream maker. Quite awhile back I bought one but the motor kept breaking and I had to keep returning it. This happened four times over a period of about 6 months so I gave up. Now I want one again. But I have a lousy freezer that isn't cold enough to freeze one of those dish things, and I hate the salt and ice situation. It makes homemade ice cream too much of a big hairy hassle.

I'm salivating over this:

Delonghi ICK8500 Ice Cream Maker
It's got the cooling elements built right in. But it's $399. I've bought more expensive gadgets but I'd still feel more than a bit of guilt if I end up buying it.

9. Same problem...
but I don't buy online or from TV.

Job Lot and National Wholesale Distributors alway havegood stuff on sale, along with not so good stuff not on sale. I have a fair collection of woks, crockpots, coffemakers, blenders, food processors, and whatnot else.

Just got a new oven because it's bigger than the perfectly good one I have and I can do bread in it. Almost bought two-- one bigger toaster oven, and one big convection oven.

That pizza gadget, though. I GOTTA HAVE ONE!!!!!!

It's 50 bucks at Wal-Mart,but I refuse to get it there even to save 15 bucks. I'm sure it will be on sale somewhere else eventually.

Somebody probably got it as a gift and are all, like, WTF? You really HAVE to get this if you like frozen or homemade pizzas. Not only is it cool but the pizza is great. Plus, I like to sprinkle cheese on top a bit later as the pizza rotates under me for perfect gooeyness.

12. Oh Ace is PURE EVIL
There's one right on my way home from work. The other day I went in for a simple lemon zester and came out with over $100 of stuff, mostly for the kitchen. I was tired of all my old mismatched tupperware with the lids I couldn't find anymore so I bought a whole new set of fancy pyrex dish sets with plastic covers (which I LOVE). There's several toaster ovens in there which i want (though not so much since I got the George Forman contact oven), and some coffee grinders and other stuff I want so much. I try to pick a different route home nowdays.

20. Save your credit rating--avoid Pampered Chef parties!!!!
Oh lord--if you have an addiction to kitchen stuff do not--I repeat NOT--ever go to a Pampered Chef party. My next door neighbor had one and I just about came back home and raided my kid's piggy bank so I could buy more.

OK--now, I ask you all, could any of YOU NOT buy one of these?

Kitchen Companions: Kitchen Spritzer
#2506 $10.00
Prepare pans with oil or mist salads with lemon juice using this refillable nonaerosol bottle.

THAT is the kind of stuff I love. They also have a lot of really nice cookware and a lot of great cookbooks too.

I'm telling you--run away really fast if you love kitchen gadgets and somebody sends you an invite to a Papmered Chef party...

23. Well, I JUST got, for my birthday, a FOODSAVER!
Edited on Sun Aug-15-04 01:08 AM by PROUD DemocRAT
I cannot WAIT to use it! Not only did dear old dad send me a FOODSAVER (and get it to me actually BEFORE my birthday and not 6 months late)but he bought a shitload of "accessories" and packed the box with em. I got 7 cannisters, one "all purpose" jar/can sealer, a 2 or more years supply of foodsaver bags, a wine bottle sealer, one of those juicer spout thingies you stick right in the orange/lemon/lime, some "as seen on tv" knives, and a 6-in-1 whisk thingie that whisks, works like tongs, etc.

There are probably some other accessories in there I'm forgetting. Now, I've looked up the product and all the other available accessories, and I WANT more cannisters like I have, some BIG cannisters, the regular and wide mouth canning jar vaccuum sealers, some more wine bottle sealers, the marinator, some mason jars, and even more cannisters! I want to suck the air out of stuff, baby! :)

Oh yeah - AND he packed me in a "Laborers for Kerry" t-shirt (or nightgown. Jesus - does he think I'm a linebacker?), and a bunch of Kerry bumper stickers.

YAY! :D

25. Hot damn! I just got ANOTHER kitchen gadget for my birthday.
A couple of minutes after midnight, and someone knocks on my door. It's my friend Greg, and he tells me he wants to be the first person to tell me happy birthday today. He walks in and hands me...

... a JUICEMAN JR!!

I'm cracking up here, wondering if the people I know, that don't know one another, had some collective meeting of consciousness that determined this birthday I MUST have a kitchen gadget theme.

27. George Foreman GV5 Contact Cooker
I have that one. I use it to 'bake' 4-5lb chickens.

First I brine my chicken, then I stuff the cavity with lots of quartered limes, do the thinly sliced garlic inserted under the skin and bake for the time suggested.

Yummy!

I've also made new potatoes using olive oil, salt and freshly ground pepper.

Made a yellow squash casserole. I liked it but fiance didn't care for it.

I'm still experimenting with the machine. It's strange this should come up today because I received an addition pan insert today in the mail. Not sure why I received it since it came with one.

3 coffeemakers
electric griddle
george foreman lean mean grilling machine
ron popeil rotisserie
toaster
bag n seal
crockpot
breadman bread machine
large toaster oven that also has a rotisserie option
deep fat fryer
large roaster oven (never used)

31. That's quite a list
A rotisserie, a toaster oven, another toaster oven, and a roaster oven (large). Wow! And the G5! Even I don't have that much space in my kitchen.

I bought a bread machine years ago and hate it worth a passion. I'd give it to my sister but unfortunately I bought a one for her when I bought mine. It's huge and makes cylindrical loaves. Cylindrical! Who in their right minds would ever want to eat a round sandwich? Plus the bread it makes is awful. It's kind of a weird grayish color and tastes bad. I've only ever used it a few times to mix dough. I want a new one! On my way home from work I walk past literally 3 charity stores: a Salvation Army store, a Red Cross store, and an AIDS charity store. They're all actually pretty nice inside with lots of really cheap things from furniture sets to dishes. Anyway, they each have a kitchen gadget section (all used of course, but nice) and each has like 10 bread machines of various kinds. I guess a lot fo people end up not liking their bread machines. Maybe I'll give them my old one and buy a new one from them.

There's tyhis really interesting vegetable casserole I'm dying to make in my new G5.

29. I bought this stupid thing.

The Black & Decker Arctic Twister. It turns store ice cream into soft-serve ice cream.

Of course it is also a pain to wash unless you have a dishwasher and not really worth the trouble. I sold it in a garage sale before moving to CA.

I got it in 2001 or so, when it was like $60. Now it goes for under $30.

Some kitchen gadgets are good, but many like this, are a waste of money and space.

30. I love softserve ice cream
I'm really too embarassed, even in front of you, my friends, to tell you what I bought about 6 months ago. It was extravagent, and huge, and made soft serve ice cream and slushies. I hated it and immediately gave it to my poor sister who's threatening to sell it or leave it out on the curb (my sister gets a LOT of my castoffs).

So does that Arctic Twister really work? I mean, if you really like soft serve ice cream then is it worth it?

If I'm gonna get that thing down, go through the little prep procedure, make the stuff (and it wastes about 20% of it- unless you carefully spoon out every bit from inside the gadget, ) then wash it, I may as well buy some ice and extra milk and make the old homemade ice cream which taste like 1000 times better.
