I watched two John Wayne movies last night...and I was entertained!
TCM was showing a day's worth of John Wayne movies...and last night, I was watching "McClintock!" and "The Shootist". And I enjoyed them.

John Wayne was everything I detested politically...an ultra right wing gung ho "bomb em' back to the Stone Age" type. And yet...he made some good movies.

I don't know what that says about me, if anything. Or why I even posted this....

1. I caught the end of 'Sand of Iwo Jima'
and I must say that the acting absolutely sucked.

I never understood how he was so popular (must be a generational thing...)

2. "The Shootist" is a wonderful swan song and
contains one of Wayne's best performances. His co-star was the liberal Lauren Bacall who enjoyed working with Wayne as did the liberal Katherine Hepburn. They managed to seperate his right wing political agenda from the man himself. I like quite a few of his films myself.

p.s.
I saw "Hondo" yesterday and that was pretty good too. Though like alot of actors he also did a lot of junk as well.

3. I'm with you...hated the guy's politics but I love cowboy movies.
I could watch The War Wagon, or Rio Bravo, or almost anything with John Wayne and a horse over and over again.

4. I like his movies.
Plus he was great when he was on "I Love Lucy".

Everytime I go to Gramann's Chinese theater, I always stand on this foot prints and say "Hey Ethel, John Wayne's block is loose!".

6. I thought..............
he was absolutely terrible as an actor and a human being. I avoid any movie with Wayne in it like it was the plague. I'd rather watch (gulp) Pauly Shore than him!

7. "Stagecoach" was on not long ago--& of course I watched it again.
What a classic! With a very young John Wayne playing the Ringo Kid. He wasn't a great actor but he was a real movie star.

Refusing to enjoy such a fine movie because of a long-dead actor's political beliefs would be really silly.

8. "McClintock" sucks
an awful movie...the only reason it is worth watching is for that great brawl one hour into the movie.
