Pierce Brosnan says goodbye to Bond

Varying reports have the suave Irish-born actor (a) writing off the secret-agent role after four films; or (b) getting the boot from youth-seeking producers.

In an interview posted Tuesday on Entertainment Weekly's Website, Brosnan sounded like a man who has had it with introducing himself as, "Bond. James Bond."

"That's it," Brosnan told EW. "I've said all I've got to say on the world of James Bond."

Brosnan also sounded like a man who thinks his bosses should similarly get over the gadget-loving spy.

10. A damn shame

I thought he was easily the best Bond since Connery, and maybe even better. Bond was never so slick and composed as he was in the Brosnan flicks.

I think a belief that Connery was the best is justifiable, but I personally think that I like his Bond because of the retro-cool of checking out Thunderball with your Pop when you're home at Thanksgiving and TBS is doing its "7 days of 007."

and I don't see Ewan McGregor in the role, either. Nor Hugh Grant. I don't know who they'll get to replace Brosnan.

The rub is that, for all of his charm and smoothness, Bond is a psychopath, an assassin. It's going to be tough to find someone who can be both the ladies man and the abject murderer and sell it to an audience. The edge that Connery and Brosnan had (and have) is the key. You could always believe that they not only had no problem killing--they actually enjoyed it most of the time.

Maybe they'll have to teach George Clooney a British accent...he might have the right stuff...

He would have easily trounced Connery. Give him a "From Russia With Love" or "On Her Majesty's Secret Service," and Brosnan would have knocked it right out of the ballpark.

For what it's worth, "The World Is Not Enough" gives a glimpse of how sublime Brosnan could be in the role.

35. Book Bond vs Movie Bond

To me they are two very different things.

Book Bond to me is far more nuts&bolts than Movie Bond. He's far less of a pretty boy, far less smooth and suave, and extremely practical. He got all the women because he could seemingly kiss so well they didn't mind that he was pretty much flat out raping them. He was also a bit blatant in his approach, which should fail in the spy business, but made up for it by being stubbornly persistent and being hugely lucky.

Movie Bond is a pretty boy. He's suave, witty, always ready with a quip, and would rather kill someone in an unusual fashion than in an efficient one. He doesn't need to seducce women, as they seem to be waiting for him at any convenient moment.

I am really, REALLY tired of Movie Bond. I want the return of Book Bond. I doubt that will happen with the Bond series, but wondering if the Bourne series might be more along those lines?
