I saw The Fog of War last night
It was brilliant. And very very unsettling--I don't know what the hell I think about McNamara. I wish it were easy to have a simple opinion about that man.

1. I saw it about a month ago
i was pretty confilcted about him after watching it. I had no idea how accomplished he was pre Vietnam war. I really wanted to hate his guts and at some points in the film i did...ie firebombing, at other times i could actually feel his remorse and guilt.

2. Even when he spoke of firebombing, I was unnerved
Would more people have died in the end without some of that brutal bombing? Very unsettling...

3. i don't know, but i do know
that the act itself was so brutal and they knew that going in, they knew the collateral damage was going to be huge, that really bothered me and stayed with me after watching the movie.

4. What stuck with me was Mc saying we are INCAPABLE of understanding
war in its depth and complexity, and that rationality--even the rationality of good men--is not enough to assure the survival of nations.

5. Saw it about a week ago
Although I didn't read his book, I had the impression he really apologized for the Vietnam war, but in the movie he didn't seem to go that far. Anyone read the book?

It was definitely disturbing, but I feel he was attempting to at least help people gain some understanding of war from his experiences.
