Poll question: Go to the doctor for laryngitis?
Okay, here's the thing. It's fairly obvious to me that I have laryngitis and I don't really have any other symptoms. Just the sore swollen throat and no voice, other than that I feel fine.

Should I waste money on a doctors visit or gather up all the home remedies you guys have been kind enough to suggest in the other threads and just sit here on DU and try them all today?

1. I'd Use BOTH Approaches
considering as you said how essential it is you be better by Friday!

When I had Laryngitis, my doctor gave me Prendisone.

2. Laryngitis usually clears itself up
in a few days. Tylenol or advil with plenty of fluids should do the trick.

However - if you develop a productive cough with yellow or green sputum, call your MD.

And as always, if you have ANY trouble breathing - call 911.

4. Lots of brandy....
Edited on Mon Jul-19-04 12:24 PM by Teddy_Salad
....with a squeeze of lemon.

And then lots more brandy.

If that doesn't clear up the laryngitis, don't worry....you'll be so drunk you won't even notice the laryngitis.

6. If symptoms persist beyond 2-weeks,
get your little bod to an ENT doc immediately. Could be something other than laryngitis.

9. Gargle with warm water and Benedryl, or a knock off version.
Or gargle with warm salt water...it'll soothe your throat. If you gargle with the benedryl, and need to sleep, just swallow. If not, just spit it out. Works for Skip whenever he's sick. I just let the laryngitis run it's course. Drink warm liquids and keep hydrated. Have someone fix you something soft to eat if you can get someone to. I always like to eat Sirloin Burger Chunky Soup when I'm sick. Soft big chunks of potatoes and carrots. YUMMY. Anyway, take care of yourself, and don't waste your money on the doctor. He'll tell you do the same thing I just did, at least that's what our doctors do.

10. Sorry to hear that you still don't have your voice back..
Going to the doctor will not do much if you aren't presenting any other symptoms. S/he will probably tell you, "there's nothing I can do - it's not bacterial so antibiotics won't help." At least that's what my doctor said. . . also told me to do all those things recommended to you last night. If you were here in Canada (socialized health care :P ) I'd say go talk to the doc. If you gotta pay big bucks and if you're not feeling bad. . . stay home, drink your tea, and kick back. Since you say you have a sore throat, I'd gargle with warm salt water too. It's going to take a couple of days. Remember, no talking. You can always console yourself with a carton of Ben & Jerry's or Haagen Daaz. Of course, if it hasn't gone away in a few more days or if the sore throat gets worse - then it's time to go to the doc.

Hang in there.
