, Dieter Bohlen and D. Hasselhoff

Just considering that four out of your five bands are almost entirely limited to the German market.

:hi:

Edit: hard to limit the list to 5.

9. Wham, Spears, Toby Keith, Anita Bryant, Van Halen.
I tried to pick one archetype to each represent a category of really bad bands or singers. Van Halen is my attempt to answer the question "what the hell happened to rock?" All through the 80's, I heard about how great Van Halen was. Therefore I'm holding them as responsible as anyone for how rock music went from a vibrant, diverse genre to an anaemic monolith. Sure, the Beastie Boys and some of the less talented spawn of grunge and metal had a roll to play, but inserted into a less moribund milieu, their places would have been that of the bands that came in with an influencing but not dominant effect, kinda like a colony of 100 parrots in a city versus 100 starlings on each corner.
