Tech suicide - need advice on new monitor, scanner, & CD player
Before my monitor kills my ability to talk with you, would DU reviewers please suggest good 19" CRT models ($250-$350) to rescue me? LCD's are nice, but I can't afford a 19-incher.

Earlier in the week I also sought advice on a good, RELAIBLE flatbed scanner (~$200-$300)which handles slides & negatives particularly well. Still seeking suggestions on that...

Finally, my home CD player has joined in the suicide pact, so any tips on a reliable single disc player (not CD/DVD) will help return me to the sound of music.

In lieu of recommendations, a donation of $1000 may be sent to the bund tech fund.

1. Let's see
A good monitor would be NEC/Mitsubishi model. I am not sure of the price though so check at www.pricewatch.com for the best prices.

A good cd player would be anything by Plextor but I have been pleasantly surprised with my Lite-On CDRW if you want to save money.

As far as the scanner, I can't help there. Sorry.

Looks like NEC/Mitsubishi has several monitors in the $200-$300 range. I sure love my Mitsubishi TV.

3. Just make sure
the one you pick has decent refresh rates at high resolutions, especially if you are gaming at high resoultions.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=41807&item=5102321474&rd=1

21", flat-screen, Trinitron tube, .22 dot pitch, max res 1600x1200 @ 85Hz.
For $199 (plus shipping, of course). A friend of mine bought from this guy, and he has excellent stuff. Plus you get a 3-year warranty. If you want a GOOD CRT, you really can't do better in your price range.

EDIT: You should check out this guy's Ebay store, too. http://stores.ebay.com/Monitor-World_W0QQsspagenameZl2QQtZkm

He has several 21" monitors, all of them in your price range, even with $50 shipping...also has over 2000 positive feedback reviews. Trust me, you're much better off getting a Trinitron than a Mitsubishi or anything else...

5. Advice from the Master Toad...

MAG makes 19" monitors for $199. Model 986FS. No complaints from me, though I wish it had 1600x1200 at 85Hz frequency. :-( Still, I'm not affected by the 60Hz mode (some people get dizzy/headaches at that rate...)

Epson's Perfection 3170 is $199 and is the best value for the money. As ALL SCANNER MAKES are a 'luck of the draw', get it from Best Buy with the $30 replacement plan. I bought the plan for every scanner I bought and, thanks to it, have saved $600 (net) in replacement scanner costs. (I used HP before. They're mediocre and rely on the HP name. Microtek is total crap. Epson is the best.)

Can't help on a CD only player. :-(

6. MAG is great...
I have a 17" flat screen monitor, but the price is a bit higher than you're looking for. On the other hand, I bought it over two years ago, so it might be in your range by now. Flat screen is the way to go... tiny footprint on the desktop and great resolution.
