The Art of Political Satire
Join us on Saturday, June 19th from 4-7pm, as we celebrate the new work of Stu Moskowitz (AKA Freda Peeple). This exhibit of politically inspired paintings will run from June 9 through July 2nd.

Directions:

Nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains, the community of Topanga is home to our new gallery (established in October 2000). To reach us, from the south take Pacific Coast Highway and make a right on Topanga Canyon Boulevard, we are located in the heart of the village (across from the Post Office). From the east, take the 101, exit on Topanga Canyon Blvd. (South).

The artist

Freda Peeple
American Patriot

She's back! An older, more confident and politically re-energized Freda Peeple at a recent gallery show of her Bush protest art.
Thirty years ago Freda Peeple was a small Jewish woman in her mid-30’s with bright red hair and a light matching moustache (which still makes her shy away from public attention) when her protest art landed her on Nixon's enemy list. At the time she was studying graphic design at the Art Center in LA, but was, in a very suspicious coincidence, soon expelled for violating their dress code.

In the post-Nixon era, except for a few months spent fantasizing about the exciting life of a White House intern during the Clinton sex scandal, Freda was for the most part apolitical. Bush's non-election changed that.

1. In 1995-1996 or so. . .
I used to work about 5 minutes from there, down Old Topanga Canyon Blvd. I picked up mail at that post office every day :).

They've always had neat galleries and such in that area, it's a very cool little community.

Also right down the street from them is a very cool gourmet vegetarian restaurant (I'm not even vegetarian) and they have excellent food :).

3. If that restaurant's the one I'm thinking of, it was run
by Elizabeth Claire Prophet (wacko Apocalyptic cult leader) before she moved to her armed compound in Montana. The wait staff were her deluded New Ager disciples. My wife got to know some and ate there...she said the food was great, and that the cult members (and their stupid leader, for that matter) were not as far gone as they became.

I used to live nextdoor to Stu. Quite an amazing artist and a great person as well. I don't get the Freeda Peeple thing though. What's that about?

5. Everytime I read "Topanga", I think of...
...Robert Downey Junior Screaming it over and over again, as the only decipherable dialoge he delivered in Natural Born Killers.
