As Bushie* said, we have a new enemy which is like no enemy we've had before. They have no real home as such and are rouges. Which rather proves how much of a moran he* is because he* wants to resort to traditional warfare to get the job done. :eyes:
Spending more money for a bunch of tommy tin soldiers is the absolutely the dumbest thing we can do, unless we want to invade every country on Earth and that's not going to solve jack shit and we have only so many musclebound thugs who'd want to beat up folk in other countries anyway.
In order to win the war on terror, we don't bomb the fuck out of every country we perceive to be an enemy or to bomb the hell out of countries who have people who don't like us. We instead figure out their MO, look at how we as a country do things and then modify how we do things to prevent them from striking again without giving up (most of or all) the freedoms America's legit population enjoys. Some real diplomacy also helps, not the "paranoid delusional cowboy antics" that our thickhead-in-chief* has been engaging in. Somehow, "Drop your weapons or we'll blast you" isn't what I'd call diplomacy. That's called intent of aggrevated assault and usually doesn't lead to the best of circumstances in any scenario it's used in.
That's partly why 9/11 happened. Nobody thought outside of the box, thinking that our traditionary army was good enough to keep the US protected. Anyone in security worth even 10% of his/her pay is going to have to think outside the box without a just cause to think of wacky possibilities like hijacking planes to crash in big buildings. And there was chatter, and even Bush* knew about the hijackings and probably the plan of attack as well (the fact he* wants no proper investigation just about screams "I'm as responsible for 9/11 as the terrorists are". At that point, anyone in security worth 110% of his/her pay should have been able to compensate for those warnings. (ditto for the 1993 attack. Indeed, there were no further attacks during Clinton's reign so WTF did Bush* do when he took office?! There was plenty of time between Jan 20 and September 11 to make all sorts of changes.)
Everybody has a mindset of "traditional" warfare and "traditional" solutions. Uh-uh. Not going to work under these circumstances. May as well repair a wristwatch with a hammer and chisel and you'll get the same effect: No repair with the entity you wish to improve upon getting in even worse shape.
Indeed, having a big gun to wave in everybody's face is not the answer. It'll just enrage more people and turn them into what we'd call "terrorists". Having little brainless dingbats* in power or intelligence positions is the real problem. I'd love to know what Kucinich would have to say on this.
The military budget must be properly spent; not insanely increased to boost traditional forces which just won't work unless we declare utter martial law on the entire population of the US and/or invade a bunch of countries who rather obviously lack the "traditional warfare" elements. And even the American populace, sheeple as they are, won't tolerate martial law.
Just my two euros. :-)
